Reserving a place to stay far away from home is always a gamble. However, I realized that this resort was special even before we arrived. A day earlier, our waiter at a nice Vancouver restaurant became excited when we told him that we were heading for the Pacific Sands. He told us of his many surfing and storm watching trips to Tofino. He always stayed at this resort. He was right; this place was superb.

The online reservation system in the Pacific Sands web site is a bit confusing. I called and e-mailed the resort a few times before booking our stay. I always received prompt replies. The staff was eager to help. Finally, I reserved an ocean view studio. There was even a special going on!

We arrived in Tofino on Orca Air. The resort is less than 10 minutes drive from the airport. There is an abandoned Pacific Beach Hotel a few miles before you reach the Pacific Sands. Don't get confused as we did and keep driving. You will see the sign for the Pacific Sands in a few miles on the left-hand side. The check-in is in the separate building. It is the first house on your right once you enter the resort; you can miss it.

Our check in was quick and flawless. The front desk staff also helped us to select a few excursions. They do have a few companies they prefer to deal with (Jamie's Whaling Station). However, if asked they will contact any of the Tofino outfitters. They also sell various passes to the Pacific Rim National Park.

Our studio was located in a three-story lodge. We stayed on the second-floor. Parked was right in front of the building. Accommodations were superb. The living area was spacious with a large comfortable bed facing the deck. There was also a couch, a dining table, and a TV with the DVD player. Our studio had a small kitchen with all the major utensils and kitchenware for four. The bathroom was basic, but with plenty of towels. There was a lot of closet space. The room also had a gas fireplace. It quickly heated the room and were rarely used it. The best part of the room was of course the ocean-facing deck. The beach was only a few steps away. Our view was spectacular. Very conveniently, a laundry room was located on the first flow of the building. You could buy laundry detergent in the gift shop.

The resort has no restaurant. Not to worry! There are many excellent restaurants in Tofino nearby. Alternatively, you can buy fresh seafood, a bottle of wine, and eat in. There are few grills right next to the beach that you can also use. The staff usually steers you to the higher end establishments. Ask the locals. They're plenty of dives with cheaper food.

We stayed at the Pacific Sands for just three days. We could have spent at month there. I would love to go back.

We had 3 nights in an one bedroom beachfront suite on the first floor with a balcony. Check in was friendly, quick and easy and a map provided to help find our room in what turned out to be quite a large complex, though it turned out we we just across from reception.

There were lovely views of the surf beach from our room through the trees though it was quite windy on the balcony. The lounge was big with a large comfortable sofa, an "old fashioned" TV, nice dining table and gas fireplace. Kitchen was well equipped and coffee etc provided. Only gripe is there is no onsite store so if you want to get some milk and bread you have to travel into Tofino which is a 10 minute drive away. There is a large supermarket there where you can get anything you desire or so it seemed!

The bedroom was separate (we had seen pictures were they seem to be integrated into one room like a studio flat). It faced onto the car-park /reception area (which had a beautifully maintained garden) with a walkway outside. Not much noise except the normal thoughtless people walking back to their rooms talking at the top of their voices regardless of the time. The bathroom was modern and attractively decorated. The whole suite was very clean and tidy and kept that way by the attendants during our entire stay. There was a PC available in reception for free internet access which was very useful.

You can reach Ucluelet in about 40 minutes from there (we had a bear watching trip booked at 7am in Ucluelet so it was helpful to know how long it would take to get there). There is folder with local information in the room including suggested walks. We walked to Sunset point to watch, yes, the sunset. There is a private boardwalk that takes you to this. We found it too windy to spend much time on the beach itself and it is very dangerous for swimming though popular with windsurfers and the beach itself was busy particularly with dog walkers. If you head inland the woods protect you from the wind (though not from the black bears which you convince yourself are going to appear out of the woods the deeper you go - though of course we saw none on our walks).

All in all, having gone into Tofino a number of times we were glad that we chose to stay outside of town. Tofino was very busy and the new age hippy/travellers dominate the place. It was easy to get to our whale and bear watching trips booked with Jamies Whaling station in Tofino and there are plenty of restaurants to choose from if you want to eat out. We ate at the Sea Shanty Restaurant, the food was great and the view spectacular and the price very reasonable. There are two petrol stations on the edge of town and the prices were no more than on the mainland. We would also recommend the botanical gardens - make sure you walk to the mudflats though there weren't many birds around when we were there - they are only there during migration time and I imagine it is quite a spectacular sight.

Overall a lovely peaceful setting for those who don't want to be in the thick of things.

We - a family with 2 boys from 7 and 9 years - are quite spoiled travellers. But I have to admit: this is just great! We had a lovely beach-villa, very complete! (even a washingmachine) The heated floor, with the hardstone tiles, was so beautifull I want it at home. The area is beautifull, well kept and since the colors of the villas are "earthy", they blend very well with the trees along the beach. They do not have a restaurant, but there are a lot in nearby Tofino. And if you do not want to use the well-appointed kitchen, you can use the central BBQ. Do check the tide-table and walk around the rocks at the beach at low-tide, you will see lots of starfish and anemones! And climb the sunset-trail to spectacular views. We just wished we had more time here.

Stayed two nights in an ocean front location on the first floor. Only disappointment was that you can't really see the ocean from your unit. I think the second level would be better. Also being on the first floor is noisy as you hear all the moving around in the room above you.

No restaurant so eat out as there are some delightful places to enjoy.

One of these was the Eagle's Nest in Ucluelet. What a treat!! Went there twice. The place is nothing to look at from outside but the views are lovely. Plus I was treated with 8 eagles flying their hearts out over the ocean near the deck. Spectacular. They played on the air currents. The locals take no notice of them!! I guess as common as sparrows for them but what a treat. Food is good also.

There is a popular restaurant in Tofino with excellent seafood. It is operated by the native Indians of the area and is excellent.

For a treat try the Wickaninnish Inn for breakfast. The view is spectacular and the service and food excellent. Treated well and not rushed.

Love the Pacific Rim Coast and the beautiful areas to explore and walk through.

I would definately go back again.

We stayed here, at Pacific Sands, on June 26th for 2 nights in the Cox Bay suite, and as soon as we arrived we were stunned by the location of this hotel, right on the beach and everything is spotlessly clean.

We were greeted at the front desk and told our room wasn't quite ready until another hour, so we had a stroll along the beach (cox bay) and the beach is awesome. not a pebble in sight, just sand, with the great white waves crashing on the shore and the views of the ocean were amazing.

Once we got our room key, the room is superb! ipod dock, flat screen tv on a swivel so that you can watch it from all degrees in the room. The bathroom is quite small although it serves well.... nice and clean, modern, good shower and fresh smelling soaps are provided. The kitchenette works well, everything you want in a weekend stay, microwave, coffee pot, fridge, cooker and the kitchen even comes with cutlery, pots and pans, dish cloths and dish soap, everything you would need... so don't pack these like we did!.... its all there! The bed is very comfy and cosy with an amazing view straight of the ocean out of the big window. Then on the deck, is the clean & modern hot tub to just sit and relax and watch the sun set from your very own room.

The room had little, great ideas such as providing guest with rain coats free of charge, just in case you forgot yours. these were brilliant. also the ipod dock, now that everyone has an ipod. this was well used. also a welcome basket was found in the fridge with a bottle of water and some hot chocolate sachets, different varities of Tea, coffee, milk, honey etc. A very nice touch. Also just a little things like ice cubes in the freezer and 2 chilled glasses, which await your drink. The room service was excellent, fresh clean towels, provided daily and bath products placed daily.

Lots of things to do in tofino... we went surfing with surf sister on chestermans beach, which was very very good. you can go bear/whale/eagle watching with local companies. or you can go on a nature tour with the indians on their own row boats and view secluded islands, or just go to a spa, or just sit by the beach all day and watch the world go by.

some really good places to eat near by, we went to Shelter restaurant, both service and food were excellent. nice & lively atmosphere for such a small relaxed place like Tofino. We also stopped by The Schooner restaurant, wich was also very good. One place you must definatetly try is Breakers Deli, these guys do the best wraps & salads ever, everything is fresh. Our favourite was the Mango smoothies, delicious!

Pacific Sands is a definate must stay in Tofino!!

My family has been coming here for years and will continue to do so. There is nothing like the spectacular view that meets you as you wake up every morning, and the sunsets are wonderful. It's a great place to 'click off', rain or shine. Service is very good, we've never had any complaints.

We stayed in a "lighthouse suite" in May 2009. We traveled with a dog, and they apparently have allocated the southernmost building to people traveling with pets. All units had west-facing living rooms and terraces - great for looking toward ocean and hearing the surf. But the buildings are set fairly far back from the beach.
We made great use of the communal gas grill and barbecue pit, as did several other guests. The grounds are well-maintained - lots of flower baskets and nice garden plots. It was great having a kitchen in the unit. Kitchen had simple plates, cutlery, glassware, pots/pans, cutting board, knives... Oddly, didn't provide sponge for clean-up though there was dish soap. A quick trip to the grocery store in Tofino yielded delicious cook-outs with beach-side seats. Great for watching surfers at sunset. Cox bay is a surfer favorite - a stunningly beautiful beach, about 1/3 of which is provincial parkland. Lots of sand-dollars on the beach and some great tidal pools.
The furnishings in Pacific Sands (at least ours) were a bit tired and dated, but had all the basics. They provide water-proof jackets which could come in handy in wet or windy weather. Linens and towels were OK. Pull-out couch was reasonably comfortable. Fireplace was great (additional Javalogs available from front desk) for taking off the evening chill. Bicycles were available for rental- we'd definitely take advantage of this next time since there are nice bike paths and trails in the area. No on-site restaurant, but with the kitchen and grill facilities, we didn't miss that at all. And there are many good restaurants in Tofino (the Pointe at the Wick Inn is wonderful, but pricey - can't beat the atmosphere and views).
