“The best part of our tour of Vancouver island”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

We have just completed an amazing 17 day trip around BC. This was our first trip to the area and also our first RV holiday. Whilst we spent a good deal of time selecting every park that we stayed at, Crystal Cove was by far our favourite. The location is fantastic, right on the beach, the hook up was private and well equipped and even though it is a relatively small site, they have a Starbucks for your morning coffee. It was all the small attention to detail that made the difference though, whether it be the beautiful landscaping, the free firewood, the extremely clean showers, the free morning coffee, the free DVD rentals or most importantly the kind, smiling and helpful staff who had an answer to every question.

Our top tips...

Make sure you spend an evening on the beach with a small campfire.

If you haven't come with bikes, you should speak to Marc at http://www.tofcycles.com who will set you up with the most amazingly comfortable cruisers. He did tell me what made them different, but I cant quite remember... something about the frame geometry and a patent!

If you come out of the resort and turn right and then the first right back towards the beach, you come to Chesterman Beach which is huge, quiet and fantastic for an evening bike ride / stroll. Riding the bikes along the beach was one of the highlights of the holiday for us all.

If you are driving to the campsite from the east of the island then it is quite a narrow and twisting road, but look out for Ellis river. It was a great place to stop with some fantastic rocks for the children to stretch their legs climbing.

We really can not recommend this place or the beautiful town of Tofino enough.

My family stayed at Crystal cove for 5 nights and it was great! The staff are friendly and the facilities are clean. The site itself is beautifully kept with flowers all over. The campground has sites for different sizes of campers and has cabins for rent. THe sites are close together and are separated by hedges. Surprising, that for a family friendly campground, it is very quiet. Everyone respects the quiet times and you feel secluded in your own little area. There is a great playground at the centre of the resort for little kids and big kids (especially the boat).THey close the gates at 11 pm for security and you feel very safe. The firewood is free with your stay and the sites are kept very clean. As soon as someone checks out, there is someone there to clean the site. The laundry facilities have 5 washers and dryers each and cost $3 each. There is no store on site but you can rent bikes and dvd movies there.

The site is next to Mckenzie beach and you can easily walk there. Great view of the tide in early am (especially if you want to see starfish, anemones, etc). Bring your bikes if you can as there is great biking trail to Tofino town. It is only 3 km away, and quite flat. There is a Co-op grocery store for your needs and a pharmacy in town. Very bike friendly area for the young and old.

My Wife and I have been visiting Pacific Rim National Park for well over 20 years. In the early years we stayed here and there until we found Crystal Cove (CC). Since that discovery 20 years ago we haven't stayed else where. Last year for our 20th anniversary we stayed in one of the cabins. We had the greatest view of MacKenzie beach and were treated like royalty: 20 years was as important to the staff as us. We returned this summer with our trailer to take our daughter and a friend surfing. We relived all the fun of camping at CC. Again the staff impressed us to no end, after driving for 5 hours we arrived 15 minutes before the office closed for the night and were greeted by energetic, helpful staff. CC is clean, you aren't charged for the small stuff, showers firewood etc and it's secure. Looking forward to going back. Love their Starbucks coffee.

Room Tip: Book Early, the cancellation policy is reasonable.

We love this place and have been coming here for years. The cabins have been updated again and are well equipped. A great west coast getaway.

The only note I have is about the Internet service... Don't expect to use it! Sitting next to the hot spot it takes about 1/2 hour to connect and works for about 5 minutes of very poor service. I tried this with at least 6 devices with the same results over three days... Don't be fooled into paying $10 for 3 hours of "better" service, it was just as bad and there are NO refunds. If you need to connect, save yourself the frustration and use the computer in the office.

Dear Geoff F.

I am pleased that you enjoyed your recent stay with us with the exeption of the Wifi issues for which I apologize.

We have just spent over $20,000 replacing our previous antiquated system with the largest open mesh system in North America and yes it came with a few bugs to work out. We launched the new system in the last week of June with hopes that within a few days it would be perfect but that was not the case. After 3 weeks of system errors and the replacement of malfunctioning equipment, I can now say it is up and running perfectly.

If you had paid for the upgraded bandwith and did not get it I will gladly refund your money as we have done with every guest that inquired during our testing phase.

I hope this answers your questions about the Wifi at the resort. Please feel free to call me personally should you have any further concerns and we look forward to your next visit with us.

Sincerely.

We are staying in the RV part of Crystal Cove and leave tomorrow. We all wish that we were staying longer. We have been on our RV trip for almost 2 weeks and this is the nicest RV camp that we have stayed in. It seems to have an army of staff and is right on the beach and very close to the town of Tofino. Crystal cove is peaceful and their 3 might minimum stay rule means less coming and going. Just make sure not to underestimate the time it takes to drive from the ferry terminal in Nanaimo. It takes more than 3 hours. We drove the hilly twisting and turning road in the dark and arrived long after the gates were closed for the night. They have a very strict quiet time policy and we had to park for the night outside the gates next to the big sign saying that it was illegal to do that. To be fair the website warns you of this. After that shaky start upon the advice of the Crystal Cove staff we called Tofcycles and within half an hour brand new mountain bikes were being dropped off at our campsite. I was glad to leave the RV parked and this was the only place where we left valuables in the RV without worrying. Foolish perhaps but that is how this place makes you feel. There are excellent bike paths running parallel to the main road into Tofino and to all the other beaches from the campsite. The grounds here are beautiful, more like a botanical garden and they are very dog friendly. They even have a dog wash near the beach. The showers and laundry facilities are convenient and as an RV guest you benefit from their easily 4 star resort/reception facilities for
their cabin guests. Free filter coffee, free firewood, free WiFi, DVD rental, library, a mini Starbucks for those who like that and lots of good recommendations of what to do in the area. We have a full hook up site with water, electricity, and sewer, picnic table, fire pit and enough privacy.

Imagine your own little cabin in the woods right on a beautiful west coast beach. These cabins are awesome. Camping in style. Nice big kitchens and bedrooms. Quaint living room with fireplace. You really feel like you've gotten away from everything without sacrificing anything. Staff so nice, with a welcome back gift waiting on the table inside the cabin. The cabins are clean and each one far enough away from the others so lots of privacy. We will be back again and again

Room Tip: Close to the beach is nice. Look at the website for a site map of the cabins.
