“A wonderful and relaxing stop”
Reviewed August 31, 2011

We stayed at Cusheon Lake Resort every summer for about 10 years. The setting is lovely, there are lots of activities for the whole family, and the hosts could not be more accomodating. The cabins are well-equipped and the resort is quiet and serene. In addition, the island is a fun and funky place to explore with galleries, artists and lots of opportunity to walk and hike. All in all, we cannot recommend Cusheon Lake more highly.

It was my daughter's wedding that we stayed there. Families and friends have taken up the whole resort, so it was really private to ourselves. The owners were very friendly. They have two dogs. There were some restrictions about bringing pets in but after they had seen the two dogs our families were going to bring, they were OK with it. I guess some dogs do pose problems for other guests, but since we had the whole resort to ourselves, it was not an issue.

We also had permission to use the utensils and dishes from the cabin in the open area, so that saved us money in renting these items. We just had to make sure we brought them back into the cabins and washed them before leaving. There were 14 picnic tables all around the resort, and we also had permission to move them anywhere we needed, as long as we put them back in their (more or less) original spots. Everything worked out fine and everyone had a great time.

The resort is lovely and quiet. I should say as quiet as you keep it. Some cabins are closer to each other than the others, so if the people in one cabin are noisy, the next cabin will hear it. However, we were lucky that we were next to a quiet one. Also, one will have to like the wilderness to appreciate this type of living. There was little cell phone reception in this area maybe blocked by the trees. However, I heard that people with i-phones were able to make phone calls. There is no TV but there is very weak wi-fi. Then at night, you will hear all sorts of noise made by frogs and other bugs, who seem to be gathering for a meeting. Also, closer to morning, you will hear birds chirping loudly so you don't need alarm clocks.

Salt Spring Island is always a nice spot for a relaxing vacation and we are return visitors every summer for a week to 10 days. We usually stay in Cabin 11 at St. Mary's Lake resport but couldn't secure a date this year that coincided with our work vacation so we decided to try Cusheon lake resort. The only negative for us is the swimming here. My husband and I have both broken out with a severe reaction to swimmer's itch and have not been brave enough to go swimming again (which is a big part of our family holiday). We didn't know at first if the welts were from bed bugs or something in the water. The itchy swollen welts have covered our entire bodies and are most uncomfortable. It is obviously a common problem because when the local pharmacist saw us he said "You must be staying at Cusheon Lake".
The resort itself has many good features, a nice family area for play and lots of canoes for everyone's use. Very small muddy beach area though so if you are looking for a summer vacation centered around the beach and swimming area I would keep looking for another location.

My fiancée and I stayed here to preview it because we are thinking of booking the entire resort for our wedding. It was December and we were the only guests at the resort for that night. Despite the horribly rainy weather we were greeted with smiles and small-town-friendly attitude. Our dog was welcome and got along with their two similar sized dogs.

Judy and Tom are the resort managers and they are very down-to-earth and they know how to run the resort; they have been doing it for 12 years. When we got to our cabin, it was nice and toasty because the heat had been turned on at 10am in preparation for our arrival. We were given firewood to light a fire which made the cabin very cozy all evening.

The kitchens are stocked with all the necessities to prepare basic foods. The bathroom has a full bath and there is enough floorspace to have a small bathroom party (whatever that would be...). The living room could probably accommodate ~20 people if everyone needed to get out of the rain and the covered deck offers a great place to listen to the rain fall onto on the lake.

I basically have noting bad to say about this place except maybe the summer rates are a bit high.

We found the resort exactly as advertised, a trip to a time when things were pretty quiet and peaceful. Completely relaxed situation. Cool log cabins with great views, 10 steps to the docks, fishing, canoeing, swimming, games, books, badminton, BBQ pit, sand beach, float for diving,.... lots to do and lots of time to relax and do nothing as well.
Totally recharged my batteries and made new friends with the other guests and Tom and Judy were very helpful.
Great to just bomb into Ganges and snoop the local artists as well.
Overall, a top notch spot. We will go again and again.
Kids had a ball and are keen to come again (aged 8,9,16 and 17)

(note: this is re my July 2009 stay, but I procrastinated too long in writing my review)
--------
The slogan "listen to the quiet" is likely appropriate for 10 months of the year, but not for July & August. We were in the cabin closest to the swimming beach, and it was a pretty noisy kids-resort. Lots of yelling kids, and big-group noise.

It was a fun place, fun time, but the marketing slogan is certainly not appropriate for their summer reality. For the off-season, I can see how it would be a very nice quiet retreat for solitude and peace, on that lovely lake setting.

But for summer, expect a kid/family orientated resort, especially if you're in a cabin near the swimming (ie sandy) beach, or beside any lake access point for that matter.

ps: the mgmt is excellent, friendly, caring.

....but just get used to the idea of seeing a kid in a porta-potty (the little-kid training kind) on the lawn - we saw that!

We booked a 1 bdrm log cabin with 24 hrs notice on labor day weekend. Thank goodness for someone's expired passport, I got their cancellation. Judy greeted us and right away I knew we were in for something memorable. Cute little cabins were spotless and we had a view of the lake a mere 20 ft away. Our woodbox was fully stocked and we enjoyed our evenings by the fireplace, listening to the quiet. And what a quiet it is. Our two night there were some of the most relaxing I have had in memory. Judy & Tom truly love their resort, and make you feel like an invited guest, not a paying customer.
Will be back for sure!
