Despite email confirmation number, no 2 bedroom apartment for us. Offered family room #1 and bitten by something! Bunk bed mattress was smelly and a large wet puddle in the carpet not visible until stepped on. Yuck!

Late night check-in (from Port Hardy ferry) was no problem. We stayed in the guest house section. Clean room with comfortable mattress and pillows and reasonable towels. The property is dated but things worked. Unfortunately there was one window in the room with a blind but no curtains so the room was never blacked out - that would be easy to fix.
Having a little fridge in the room was a bonus and there's also access to a full kitchen (stove, oven, coffee maker, microwave, fridge and freezer) - it was challenging to find more than 2 bowls and 3 dinner knives but there are ample forks and plates! Perhaps bring a few essentials if you're going to rely on the kitchen facilities.
When our room was cleaned it felt like the person paid attention to what they were doing and took care in making up the beds and setting the kids' stuffies up in fun ways.
Overall, a good option for a couple of nights. We had everything we needed and at a reasonable price.

We stayed in apartments here on two occasions during a holiday in northern BC. The hotel is near the centre of the town and parking is behind the buildings and is free. We first had apartment 2 and subsequently 4. The latter is larger with better sized bedrooms. There is a good kitchen area with several items provided including coffee, and basic requirements for cooking. There is a large TV with numerous stations to choose from. Wifi is free and reasonably fast. There is a washing machine and tumble dryer which each cost $2. The beds are reasonably comfortable but the curtains are not very thick which could be a problem for some people. The bathrooms are a bit cramped but have all you need. Overall the accomodation is good - but the major problem was the noise until late in the night. We had to ask the staff to intervene for us to stop numerous people having noisy music in the common room under the accomodation which was extremely noisy until they were asked to stop by the staff. This happened each night and kept us all awake. The owners really need to prevent this to make this a hotel we would return to.

This guesthouse is quaint, clean and well equipped. Free WiFi.
We stayed overnight so as to catch the ferry to Haida Gwaii in the morning, Staff were very open and helpful. They referred us to a wonderful restaurant for dinner (Cow Bay Cafe) and it is a must stop. Excellent seafood pasta and worth another visit.

The Black Rooster was very much like a motel, with a well stocked kitchen shared between two bedrooms, each with their own recently upgraded bathroom. We enjoyed the very comfortable (albeit an older building) facility and would come again.

Room Tip: All rooms are good since it is removed from high traffic roadways.

I hate leaving bad reviews, and I rarely do as I am easily pleased. However, despite the updated decor, great location, and good value, we found some bed bugs. Yep. The dreaded two words no traveller ever wants to utter. We stayed in apartment 5, and it was all rainbows and butterflies until we found the evil doers in the front bedroom. It appears a recent infestation as we only found a few, and we notified the owner of the problem. That being said, we were told the previous tenants had the same complaint, so it was clear I had to leave this review. My advice, if you book here, check your beds very closely.
