“Lovely, clean and spacious dorms. Great hostel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 15, 2013 via mobile

This was a great place. The people were so friendly and helpful and the common area was so cozy and relaxed. I loved the size of this place and it's an easy place to meet people or just relax. It's very clean and the dorm rooms very spacious and comfortable. I felt at home here the minute I arrived.

I stayed in many hostels on my journey through Canada and the Painted Turtle was definitly under the top 3 best places to stay!
The rooms are basic, but clean and comfortable, private bathrooms on each floor and a cozy dining area, which almost feels like your own living room, perfect to meet other travelers.
And I also want to mention the awesome stuff! They are friendly and lovely people, who are helping you out with any questions you have! They gave me tips where to stop on my trip through Canada and also some insider tips where to go on the island!
Placed in the heart of Nanaimo, bars, cafes and shops are in a 1 minute walking distance. The ocian is also only a short walk away from the hostel!
So all in all, I would recommend this place!

Basic, comfortable accommodation in the heart of Nanaimo. Minutes walk from numerous bars and restaurants and the water front.

Prior to our arrival they recommended and booked a place for our party of 11 to eat. It was a perfect call and so helpful given our late arrival time.

We were warmly greeted on our arrival and the check in process was simple and efficient. We were allowed extra storage room for our sports equipment at no extra charge.

When we left one of our party left a case behind. Sabrina, a lovely young woman who exemplifies good customer service and professionalism, rang my mobile to warn us and put the case in a taxi for us because we were already queued for the ferry. Thanks to this we didn't miss or homeward flight to the UK.

Would not hesitate to recommend.

Dear Batearedfreak,

We want to thank you for your kind words.
All the staff at the Guesthouse strive to provide the best quality service. I am delighted that we were able to exceed all your group needs.
P.S : That was not the first time we sent a taxi to the ferry with guest luggage. I am very glad we were able to get it to you before the boat departed. :)

Take Care,
Sabrina Sawchuk

My wife and I stayed at the Painted Turtle Guesthouse recently. We stayed in a Comfort Room on the top floor facing the street. The room was pretty basic. There is no air conditioning but there was an oscillating fan. Even though it was sunny out, it never got hot anyways--maybe because it's right by the ocean/Strait of Georgia. It was fairly noisy, as we did sleep with the window open and our room was above a bus stop. And sound did travel down the hallways. The noise didn't bother us, though.

We initially had some concern about waits for the shared bathrooms, but the waits were fine. They were nice and clean, and guests didn't seem to be slobs, so they stayed that way.

The common kitchen was well stocked with cooking utensils, dishes, etc. The fridge was very full, so you had to be good at Tetris to get your food in. I saw staff cleaning the floor several times. It's been my experience that common areas shared by many tend to get neglected and messy (even with friendly reminder signs), but everybody did a good job of keeping dishes, etc washed and put away.

Being right in downtown, once we parked in a city parkade a 30-second walk away (cost just a few bucks a day) we were within walking distance to everything. But as I said earlier, your room can get a bit noisy depending on the side your room is on.

The place isn't fancy (after all, it's more a hostel than a hotel), but the price is right, it's adequate, and fits our needs; I think we'll be staying again for our yearly visit to Nanaimo.

We had a great stay here, right from the very friendly welcome we received when we arrived, including a tour of the hostel & a run down of everything they offer!
The room was fine, the bed was really comfortable, there was enough pillows to find one that was just right.
The kitchen had ample space to prepare and cook meals, as we'll as there was plenty of room to sit down to eat & kick back in the lounge afterward.
Great experience here, met lots of other nice backpackers & even gave a couple a ride to Long Lake after we checked out.

I was surprised how nice and comfy that hostel is. The stuff explained and showed ! me my room and all the common areas. The rooms fit Backpackers and backpacks!, nice lockers with the ability to charge your electronical equipment, the bathrooms are separate and have toilet, shower and sink, so just like a bathroom at home and you can spent your time for all the things that you have to do by your own!
The kitchen and living area feels also more than in a appartement than a hostel. And you get in contact with other travellers so easy there.
And I have to mention, it was so clean, the rooms, bathrooms, kitchen. Made my stay there even more enjoyable.
I was staying in a dorm, but I had the chance to look into the private rooms, they look very nice as well.
I loved that place and would stay there again if I get a chance.

Room Tip: The dorms are absolutly ok and there are only four sleeping in them. But the private rooms look also...

One of the nicest hostels I have stayed. Friendly and helpful staff, clean bathrooms, good central location but the best feature is the lovely big kitchen/lounge/common room. Only downside was that the dorm was a bit hot, but we were there in the middle of a heat wave so doubt this is a common problem.
