Painted Turtle Guesthouse
Reviewed September 19, 2012

Stopped here end of August beginning of September.
The hostel does not have it's own car park and we parked on the road, the staff give good advice and it was as well that we went out for the day in it, other wise it may have proven costly.
Our room was a private double and a bit restricted on space.
It was quite clean although the bed sheets had seen better days as they were bobbled.
The numerous washrooms were well serviced.
Laundry facilities were good, but if you wanted to hang items to dry there wasn't much space, this may be different in one of the dorms.
The kitchen was pretty good although there seemed to be a couple of people leaving their dirty dishes about, this should be monitored I feel.
A reasonable selection of board games and magazines to entertain and a very good wifi network.
Supermarket was about a 10 minute walk away which was good.

We, my friend and me, went to this hostel a few days ago and really enjoyed our stay there. It is directly in downtown and just a few minutes from the bus stop away.

The hostel was very clean and the staff was very helpful and friendly. The kitchen is modern and there is a really cozy living room.

We stayed in a four bed dorm and found the rooms not too small. The only thing I didn't like was the noise from a pub outside our room. But beside that I really enjoyed our stay there and can definitely recommend this place.

If you are looking for affordable 'no frills" accommodation in the heart of Nanaimo, then this is it. The hostel is located downtown within walking distance of a variety of shops, restaurants and parks. There is limited parking on the street if you have your own vehicle, but you can go in and out of a parkade across the street for $6 a day.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 4 nights in a private room (which includes a queen-sized bed and dresser). The bed wasn't very comfortable, but we weren't expecting a pillow top anyway. The bathroom facilities were better than expected-very clean individual bathrooms with a shower and toilet just across the hall. We stayed during the low season and the hostel itself was very quiet. There is a common room with couches and a fully equipped kitchen (the fridge and freezer space comes in handy). We were also able to use the coin-operated laundry facilities (Tip:bring your own detergent if you remember, but the front desk will sell you a box of tide for $2 for a load if you forget).

Our only complaint (amongst ourselves) was the noise from the street outside of our room. The hostel is in an older building and the walls are thin, so even with the window closed we could still hear people talking and traffic outside (the street must be on a major bus route). But again, for the price we really couldn't complain. If you require silence in order to sleep though, I would probably suggest you look elsewhere as I don't imagine it's any quieter downtown in the summer!

Overall, we had a pleasant experience here. The hosts are also super helpful and friendly!

The room was a bit tight for the four of us adults, but it was a "family room," not necessarily for all adults. Loved the location, loved the great room and the service. Guesthouse is very appropriate. The kitchen is nice with new appliances and everything was very comfortable. WILL stay again.

Took a quick get-a-way from the mainland to Nanaimo all by myself March 2012 for a 2 night stay. This place exceeded all my expectations. Clean, hospitable, and comfortable with lots of space in the kitchen and great-room. Very quiet, dispite being on a main downtown corner. Reasonable discounts given to PT guests at nearby restaurants is a great plus. I would recommend this to anyone, budget oriented or otherwise.

The Painted Turtle is a hostel. Guesthouse makes it sounds like there are more services offered than there really are. PROS: Very clean and quiet, friendly staff, great location, exceptionally tidy bathrooms. CONS: For anyone with mobility issues the number of stairs can be a challenge. And I wished we had been warned about the crowds that congregate outside of the Corner Lounge at night (the martini bar below the hostel). The street noise made it impossible to sleep between 1-2pm. But $67 for a private room a stone's throw from two major hotel chains charging twice as much...I guess a little noise is the price you pay. I'd stay again.

Room Tip: Avoid a room facing Bastion St if you can.

Back in October '11, my co-worker and I booked a room at the Painted Turtle Guesthouse for a 3-night stay. We were attending a conference at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre, which was just around the corner. We would have normally booked a standard hotel, but thought the guesthouse/hostel would be a more convenient and budget-friendly option, plus they were highly recommended. Very convenient indeed -- just a quick 3-minute walk to the centre! We opted for a large room with 2 bunk beds, each having a bunk bed to ourselves. Beds were comfortable and clean. The washrooms (shared between the rooms on our floor) were very clean, and we never had a problem finding one that was open, at any time of day. We rarely heard or saw other guests, though we were pretty certain most rooms on our floor were occupied. We didn't spend much time in their kitchen/lounge area, since we were busy with our conference schedule, however it seemed comfortable and inviting. The service provided by owners, Bruce and Angie, was fantastic. They were warm, friendly and helpful. We will absolutely stay there again, whether on business or pleasure.
