Beautiful Newcastle Island offers a great walk, lovely beaches & some History. Good for all ages & abilities!

Take the walk on taxi (small fee) & then go at your own pace.

I've been going to Newcastle Island since the mid 60's. It is a sanctuary of peace and calm right in Nanaimo Harbour. Wildlife, beautiful trails to walk, picnics, swimming, you name it, it is there. There is a small concession there where you can buy hamburgers and French fries and just sit and enjoy the beauty. Truly a unique little island, only a 5 minute ferry ride to.

We took a lunch along (and three dogs) and had a great walk around the perimeter of the island. We saw deer grazing. They are so used to people and pets that they just ignored us. They looked at us once and just kept grazing. The dogs (on leashes as required) did not even notice them. The scenery, the small island and the sea air make this a great outing. The little ferry goes often enough that you don't feel stranded. The island is large enough so you barely see other people. Very peaceful and relaxing.

A 5 minute trip on the local ferry takes you to an island where one can get away from the hustle and bustle of the main island.
Great place to go for the day. This could be just the use of the island trail which will allow you to enjoy the beach and views of the ocean and stops to read up on the islands history.
Before leaving for Nanaimo food is available. Watch for the blonde raccoons found on the island.

Good facilities for camping but you have to pack light because of the ferry ride and walk- in sites. Charming histioric buildings, long walk around the park and lots of au-natural picnic sites. Lovely typical west coast beaches, not great for swimming but for beachcombing. Overnight camping usually involves encounters with curios wildlife.
