“Great day trip spot”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 1, 2013

We have spent the day on Newcastle island and kayaked around it. Both trips were awesome. There is a small passenger boat the goes to Newcastle, the schedule is more frequent in the summer. Renting the kayaks was a nice, cheap option as well and this way you can see more of the island and easily pull into one of the beaches. You will have to be mindful of the BC ferry waves as they can be pretty choppy for the novice kayaker. There are some great beaches and nice hiking spots, we both really enjoyed our time on and around Newcastle.

“A great place for a walk”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2013

Newcaste Island s a great place for a walk - but pick a nice day so as toi staty dry! You reach it by a ferry from the Nanaimo waterfront - or on your own boat. You can easily adjust the length of the walk you want to do as there are a number of walks in this BC Provincial Park. However, the ferry only runs in the summer months. You can also arrange a side trip to or from the Dinghy Dockj Pub on the nearby Protection Island, to allow you a good lunch too! You can also camp on the island. Well worth a trip!

“Nature”

An experience with nature, walking through the woods or along the rocks by the shore. We were chased away early by storm clouds.

“retreat to enjoy”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 4, 2013

Newcastle Island is a short ferry ride away from nanaimo and can be a destination if you only have a short period of time...say while waiting for a ferry to the mainland or just a day to enjoy. Its an island with an interesting history and has lots of trails to walk and lose yourself in thought. many little oceanside nooks and crannies where you can tuck in and just sit and enjoy your seeton stool..(contemplation). Avoid holiday weekends as they tend to be very busy and noisy..but any other time is quiet and enjoyable...take a lunch, a good book, and find yourself a little bit of paradise....it really is...

“Newcastle Island”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 12, 2013

The island sits in a position off of the Nanaimo harbour next to Protection Island. They "protected" the inner harbour hence the name. Newcastle was named from the British who landed here to mine, log or fish. Newcastle Island has a very high quality of stone that was cut out and sent around the world to use in the pulp and paper industry.
