The main gallery offers a sense of what life was like for Nanaimo's earliest settlers and the Snuneymuxw First Nation. Our award winning replica coal mine is a special treat. The museum also manages the Bastion, an original Hudson's Bay Company post built in 1853. Don’t miss the gift shop!Museum Hours: 10am - 5pm Monday to SaturdaySummer Hours: Open Daily 10am - 5pm

“Great snapshot of Nanaimo”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2012

I was trying to kill time in the city and was pleasantly surprised by the Museum. For a small museum, they did a great job. The exhibits were very well done and interesting. For a $1 cover charge, it is worth the visit.

“Small but lots to see.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 2, 2012

For a small museum, they certainly packed in a lot of history. There was a good mining display and I loved the idea of bathtub races. Also enjoyed the Peanuts cartoons and the connection with space flight. The museum has a very good shop selling anything from an inexpensive pen to a large and beautifully hand carved storage box. Great staff too and there is a coffee shop attached. A very good place to visit.

“Don't miss this gem.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 20, 2012

I was very impressed with this museum; I believe it is the best museum for a town this size that I have ever visited. Located upstairs in a new building in the center of town, the Nanaimo museum packs a lot of interesting displays into its space. It is considerably larger inside than you might think from the lobby/gift shop. Inside are exhibits about the yachting, shipping, lumber and coal mining history of the town including a simulated coal mine. When you enter the museum you are given a metal token representing one of the miners, and when you enter that into a display case near the end of the coal mine you find out more about him and how he was affected by the various mine disasters over the years - a nice "personal" touch. There is a model school room that you can enter, complete with desks, inkwells, blackboard and typical embellishments that you would have found in a grade school. A small portion of the museum is dedicated to the history of the Nanaimo bar, a local confection that is popular in much of Canada, but sadly has not been "discovered" by those of us in the USA. The museum staff in the lobby were exceptionally helpful in sharing information about the town and other things to do there. The admission pice is ridiculously low - $2.00, or $1.75 for students and seniors. Inexpensive parking in the parkade under the museum makes a visit easy and a must for anyone who wants to learn a little (or a lot) more about this fascinating town.
