“Beautiul Room, great service!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 23, 2006

We absolutely loved this Inn. We had just stayed one horrible night at the Best Western Dorchester and found it too disgusting to remain. We went literally across the street to the Coast Bastion and loved it! Such a great room with a wonderful view. It was very clean, especially for a pet friendly room! It was such a large room and well-appointed (I guess we got one of the recently renovated rooms!) The staff was great and we did not want to leave.

We had an unfortunate scheduling incident with another hotel in Nanaimo. We explained our dilemma to the desk clerk who was very kind in accomodating us for the night. We received and excellent rate on a very nice room on the spot! The room was very clean and the staff was very friendly!

Stayed 1 night and used the hotel parking lot which was supposed to be patroled. Rental car trunk was vandalized, and valuable items and documents stolen. Royal Canadian Police said vandals are common on the "secured" parking lot.

My request for a quiet room was honoured by putting me on the top floor - but unfortunately right above the air-conditioning system! It was too loud to have the windows open, but quiet enough with them closed.

The room was very clean and newly-decorated, with a big TV, minibar/fridge, bathrobes and free high-speed internet access. The balcony (a vertigo sufferer's nightmare) was a bit of a waste of time as it could only accommodate one, standing, person.

Staff were professional, friendly and unpretentious. The location couldn't be faulted. All in all it was very good value - the room itself was as comfortable as some I've paid twice as much for.

This hotel needs updating, there were stains on the carpet. Felt not that clean, and the decor is very dated. For the rate, I thought it was overpriced. More like a tall average motel than a nice hotel. Staff were very nice and helpful though.

The hotel was re-furbished in 2004 and is much fresher. Beds are great and rooms have nice ammenities. This is one of the nicer places in Nanaimo and is nicely located next to the Port Theatre and within walking distance to good restaurants. The walk-on fast ferry to Vancouver is across the street as is a picturesque harbour walk. Staff are very courteous and pleasant.

I stayed here with my wife, my 9 month old son and my sister-in-law on Sept 25, 2004. I was a little concerned after reading the reviews on this site, but it looks like they just completed a renovation in February 2004, and it looks great. Nanaimo itself is quite a nice town, too. Anyone considering a trip to Victoria may want to spend a day here as well while on the island. If nothing else, you will enjoy much lower hotel prices than in Victoria and the drive along the island coast between the towns has some nice scenery. So, in summary:

The Good:
*Great location. Short drive from Departure Bay ferry terminal, and centrally located so you can explore the very nice arts and historic district on foot. Nice view of the bay from our room, too.
*There are several golf courses just north of Nanaimo, if thats your thing.
*Good coffee for the in-room coffee makers.
*Friendly, helpful staff.
*Free high speed internet.

The Bad:
*Pathetically small balconies - not sure way its a sliding door instead of just a window.
*Our heater didn't work, but we didn't need it that night anway. I imagine this is isolated to our room.
*Room aren't huge, but aren't too small. I would have preferred a little bigger, though.
*Parking is extra, but only $4 or $5 per day.

The Odd:
*First place I have stayed at in long while where you get actual plain-old metal keys for the room locks.
