Coast Bastion Hotel
Ranked #2 of 18 Hotels in Nanaimo
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 26, 2005

The hotel was re-furbished in 2004 and is much fresher. Beds are great and rooms have nice ammenities. This is one of the nicer places in Nanaimo and is nicely located next to the Port Theatre and within walking distance to good restaurants. The walk-on fast ferry to Vancouver is across the street as is a picturesque harbour walk. Staff are very courteous and pleasant.

I stayed here with my wife, my 9 month old son and my sister-in-law on Sept 25, 2004. I was a little concerned after reading the reviews on this site, but it looks like they just completed a renovation in February 2004, and it looks great. Nanaimo itself is quite a nice town, too. Anyone considering a trip to Victoria may want to spend a day here as well while on the island. If nothing else, you will enjoy much lower hotel prices than in Victoria and the drive along the island coast between the towns has some nice scenery. So, in summary:

The Good:
*Great location. Short drive from Departure Bay ferry terminal, and centrally located so you can explore the very nice arts and historic district on foot. Nice view of the bay from our room, too.
*There are several golf courses just north of Nanaimo, if thats your thing.
*Good coffee for the in-room coffee makers.
*Friendly, helpful staff.
*Free high speed internet.

The Bad:
*Pathetically small balconies - not sure way its a sliding door instead of just a window.
*Our heater didn't work, but we didn't need it that night anway. I imagine this is isolated to our room.
*Room aren't huge, but aren't too small. I would have preferred a little bigger, though.
*Parking is extra, but only $4 or $5 per day.

The Odd:
*First place I have stayed at in long while where you get actual plain-old metal keys for the room locks.

we stayed at the Coast Bastion for four nights in August 2004 and found the staff helpful and the hotel well located in the most attractive part of the town's waterfront. Rooms facing the north have much better views than those facing south. we were able to move to a better view after the first night but found the bed was not so good. Somewhat disappointed to have booked into a hotel offering a hot tub only to find that it was out of order and under repair. the temporary smaller pool looked dirty and uninviting. breakfast passable and reasonable value with very attentive staff. we found that it was not really necessary to use the hotel parking as the on street parking locally is pretty good with plenty of spaces for up to two hours during the day and free overnight. As we were using this as a base to explore more of the island this was fine for us.

I haven't stayed at this hotel for about 10 years and nothing much has changed, this hotel is looking very tired. Nothing has been updated, the carpeting is looking tattered and worn in places, and the decor is very dated. The location is good, however, very central for this small city.

The rooms do have water views from some angle but the balconies are tiny and useless. The bed in my room was squeaky and not that comfortable. I was relatively high up in the tower but overlooked the ventilation exhaust and the noise was too loud, I certainly did not get a good night's rest.

One great thing is the complimentary coffee, an excellent choice (Torrefazione, spelling?) for those guests from the West Coast who are used to their premium coffee!

I wouldn't stay there again until they modernize the property.
