“Horrible Service”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 13, 2008

We booked this hotel for one night and the service was absolutely terrible.

We booked two rooms, one with one bed and the other for two. We had three adults staying in the second room. When we arrived, the second room for three people had only one bed. We asked if it would be possible to switch to another room, but the hotel was booked solid. We were only slightly disappointed at this point, since things like this happen all the time. We then asked if we could have a cot for the room we booked. And the front desk told us no. They then asked us how many people were staying in the room, and we told them three. The front desk then told us that there would be an extra charge. We're from Vancouver, and since three people could not sleep in one bed, we told the hotel that there would only be two adults staying in the room and the third adult would leave for Vancouver on a late ferry.

The next morning, the hotel still charged us the extra fee, even after we protested and explained that only two adults stayed in the room. They said that because a third person "used" the room (showered in the room) that we had to be charged an extra fee.

We understand that there may be some people who would lie to hotel staff about an extra person, but the hotel should really give their customers the benefit of the doubt, especially since there are also honest people who stay at their hotel (like us).

We honestly feel that this type of service is horrible. It shows what little regard the staff at the Coast Bastion Inn have for their customers.

Great location right in the downtown area. Harbor & restaurants within easy walking distance. Top floor room with a view if you can get it. Clean & fairly quiet. Breakfast is not free but good. Great walking path around harbor across the street. Underground parking for a fee.

Quick 15-min drive from Vancouver ferry terminal. Accommodations were standard business-class fare, but what made this stay above average were the outstanding views of the Nanaimo harbor from the 3-walls of windows and (small) balcony on our 10th floor room (premium view room). Great location within walking distance to plenty of restaurants and the new conference center. Staff at check-in wasn't particularly warm to us (our younger-looking appearance perhaps?) but all other staff contacts, who were younger themselves, provided great service. We'll definitely stay here on our next trip through Nanaimo.

My wife and I stayed here once before a few years back and were very impressed by the hotel and its staff. When we were invited to Nanaimo for a wedding this past weekend, we didn't even give a second thought as to where we'd stay. Unfortunately we were very disappointed with the overall stay. There were two BIG events the hotel was hosting so MAYBE that is why things that weekend were soured. The room was clean, but VERY well used. Nail polish stuck on end tables, dark stains plumbing fixtures, old bedding. I don't remember this from the previous stay, but the walls are extremely thin...to the point that we could almost participate with our neighbors @ 1AM. Everything in the hall is heard or felt in the room. Every door closure resonates through the entire hall. The Super 8 has better door closure mechanisms and insulation. Really disappointed with the overall stay @ the Bastion. Will definitely look @ somewhere else next stay in Nanaimo.

I stayed Bastion for a conference. I want to say that food served during the confenrece was superve. They offered great variety in both vegetarian and meat eaters selections. Plus huge selections of deserts! In a negative side, I was surprised that they didn't have "quick check-out" options as many other chains nowadays have. That should made check-out much efficent. Overall, it was great stay.

After taking the short ferry ride over to Vancouver Island we drove a short distance to Nanaimo and the coast bastion inn. We had a fantastic room over looking the harbour. It was lovely to sit and watch the seaplanes taking off and landing. We only stayed here one night but it was great with close proximity to the sea front and harbour it was lovely for a walk. We found a fantastic fish and chip restaurant on the front which was amazing and very, very fresh.

In the evening we ate in the hotel restaraunt and that was very good also. I had lobster and could definatly recomend it.

The room itself was good. Clean and comfortable and a fridge to keep the kookani beers cold. Would definatly recommend a stay here, stunning views from the window.

My husband and I always stay at the Coast Bastion when in Nanaimo. We have stayed other places as well, but have found that this is our favorite. The rooms are always perfectly clean and stocked, and if you get a room with a view, it is lovely. It is conveniently located in downtown Nanaimo, within walking distance to lots of places. They have underground parking, which you do pay a small sum for. This is one of the few hotels I've stayed at where you get good service, cleanliness, comfort, and quiet all in one! I'm never disappointed! The room service staff are also incredibly friendly, and the food is great as well. Don't stay anywhere else!
