We were in Nanaimo for a track and field meet with three families. We planned it together and booked for our little athletes dietary needs (a kitchenette, fridge...). Apparently it was a sold out weekend and a provincial gymnastics competition was on at the same time. Sold out or not, we were disappointed that we weren't informed that our required room type was not available since diet on such weekends actually matters (we aren't crazy - we love to eat out like the rest of the world, but before sporting events, food purity matters).
The room rates were good and the room bed specifications met our needs so I would consider returning if we had some guarantee that our room types would be properly honoured in the future.
We also dined in the restaurant, and although it was convenient, I wasn't impressed that it was obvious that servers were annoyed with the volume of guests they had. I get it - you want off your shift, but I don't need to know about it when my kids also need to eat. Talk to your manager, but don't show your guests as they don't feel welcome.
All that said, I would recommend the hotel but if room requirements matter, don't leave it to chance - ask for a guarantee or book somewhere else. Definitely only eat here if you need convenience. Otherwise, go into town. We had better food and way better service elsewhere. If it's a sold out weekend in Nanaimo, consider making reservations for large groups ahead of time - don't wait like we did, or you'll be eating at the hotel.
