This trail is difficult to get to - slow travel on a winding gravel, washboard road. But so worth the drive! There are a LOT of trestles, two tunnels, and spectacular views. The rental bikes (right at the start of the trail) are great, but fairly expensive - $40 for 4 hours. The entire trail, even at a snail's pace, is not more than 3. But where else would you get the opportunity to see such vistas on a bike - really worth the effort and expense!

Bike riding along the kettle valley rail line over the trestles was an amazing experience - highly recommend! So many places for photo ops along the way.

For anyone living in or visiting Kelowna and you like to bike this FREE attraction is spectacular. Stop at the local Tourist Centre and get a local map for the driving route or get it from the website at
http://www.myra-trestles.com/index.html/

Currently there is damage to Trestle #3 that occurred in a land slide this spring that has made it impassable but there is a bypass route that is now open that you can walk your bike around and continue on to ride the rest of the Trestle route. They are repairing the damage so hopefully all will be back to normal in 2014.

The normal Trestle bike route is basically flat riding on packed gravel so it is easy for all ages, however the bypass route is not flat so until the damage is repaired expect some hilly climb.

You will go over 18 Trestles and through 2 tunnels over the course of the ride. You can also walk the route but to cover the entire route and return is about 24 kms so biking ensures you will see it all. You can also rent bikes in the parking lot area of the Ruth Station parking area in the late spring- summer- early fall months. Access is via McCulloch Road past the Gallagher’s Canyon golf course to the Myra Forest Service Road then up the FSR for 8 kms.

The views of the surrounding mountains and valleys and the Kelowna city are fantastic so don't forget your camera.

We have done this ride many times and it is always enjoyable. Please pick up your trash and ride it out. Make it enjoyable for those who come after you.

We have been slowly completing biking on Rail to Trail routes across Canada and was not disappointed in the Myra Canyon section. The access was challenging expecially since we did not want to damage the small rental car we had. We chose to access via Ruth Station since the gravel section was much shorter than the Myra Station access (less crowded also). We rented bikes from Outbound Cycles so I had a full suspension Haro which was really cool (I ride a Kona Lisa back home). The views were incredible and I really liked the tunnels. There was a sign before one of the sections that said it was closed for maintenance but we saw people come from the other side so we went through the fence and continued to Myra Station. We did cross a damaged bridge which was all twisted and boards were missing but I guess safe enough for people to cross. We had lunch on trail at one of the many benches positioned so you could get spectacular views. We did not see any Pikas but we did hear them. Overall, we were glad to add this Rail to Trail section to our completed list.

Its easy to walk or bike along the old railway route through Myra canyon because its very flat and easily accessible and you can do as little or as much of the route as you wish depending on the time you have available. There's plenty of free car parking and when we arrived we found that it was possible to hire bikes if you preferred not to walk the route.

There are plenty of information boards telling the history of the site and how the tressles were restored following a fire ten years ago. The engineering works to open up the line are quite impressive. Each tressle is numbered and the distance travelled is marked in km so that you can easily keep a track of how much of the route you have covered. As you progress through the route, you also walk through several tunnels through the mountain. On a clear day the views of Myra canyon and surrounding area are great. On our visit, we were also lucky enough to see a small black bear snoozing down in the canyon.
