“Pleasantly surprised”
Reviewed December 22, 2012

Found this restaurant through Groupon. Stopped in for dinner last night and had a tasty, filling meal. We arrived a bit early but in minutes people started coming in - some to dine in and some for take-out. With the Groupon was a set 3 course menu with the entre being your choice. Given my questionable dexterity with chop sticks they provided me with a fork. It is one place we would visit again.

“Sushi Unlike Others - And That's Good.”
Reviewed November 17, 2012

If you're looking for a cookie-cutter, same old/same old sushi place, Wasabi Izakaya is not your place. They're a little bit more innovative at this downtown Kelowna location than your average sushi place..

We dropped in to Wasabi Izakaya after a fundraising event in mid-November before heading home. We'd heard a few good comments from associates so we wanted to check it out ourselves.

Located on a busy street, it's a great location if you're meeting friends before a show or to take in a special evening or sporting event in the arts and cultural district. It's small though, about 40 seats or so. Don't be surprised if you have to wait for a table on a busy night.

The room does not feel small though and it seems quite spacious with the open concept design of both the dining area and the kitchen. There's a pleasing blend of wood tones and decent lighting suggesting somebody took a moment to think about the ambience, something all too often forgotten in many casual restaurants.

We were greeted immediately and given a table close to the kitchen. Although open to the dining area, the kitchen isn't exactly a 'show' style sushi kitchen, the high counters make it tough to see any of the detailed work the staff may be executing.

We were offered tea, as is the custom at many Asian restaurants. We were delighted to see the practice of including this small gesture as part of your dining experience was maintained without a charge on the tab, something that is not always the case.

One of the first things you'll notice that sets Wasabi apart from its plainer brethren is the lack of old standbys: no California Roll, no BC roll, no Dynamite roll. But don't be dismayed. There's plenty of similar options that will reveal themselves after a look at the menu. While not extensive, it does have a satisfactory 30 or so items to choose from.

We selected the Spicy Tuna roll, the Wasabi Crab roll, the Tuna and Yam roll and the Wasabi House roll: a blend of tuna, shrimp, scallop and cucumber. All were very good. The seafoods had distinctive fresh tastes and the interplay of crisp vegetables and the rice was understated. There's a little more daikon used here and I like that. The rice, too, seems superior. The takeaway story on the food: fresh and prepared with respect for the ingredients.

There's also lunch service from 11:30 to 2:00. Check for hours and days of business before going. They're not open 7 days a week.

“Izakaya in Kelowna?”
Reviewed August 31, 2012

Its been a couple years since we have been back to Kelowna. This was the second time we ate at Wasabi. The food was very good and the menu was original, as one would expect from an Izakaya. Ramen, ribs, sushi and more.

Wasabi would give any Izakaya in Vancouver a good run for their money!
Great food and service, a must for Izakaya lovers!

“Always Good”
Reviewed July 28, 2012

Ebi Chili Mayo, Ikanokaraage, karaage, miso black cod, grilled saba, agadashitofu salad, wasabi house roll, spicy yakisoba . . . . the list goes on!!! This has to be my favourite Japanese restaurant in Kelowna. The service is excellent, and the food is good. If you go here, you will be happy. It's worth the short walk down from Bernard Ave to come here!
