Good value, good food and a good experience. The owner clearly cares about her clientele and wants everyone to enjoy her cuisine.

“Excellent quality, service above the call”
Reviewed August 3, 2013

I'm profoundly puzzled by the recent negative review of Quilas. We were at Quilas, sitting on that very patio for two evenings right perhaps at the very same time as the writer and had the exact opposite experience and came to completely different opinions. To each their own, I guess. We stumbled on Quilas just as they were closing one evening and they stayed open for us. The owner served us a brilliant guacamole, creating it right at our table. It was at least as good as the best guacamole I've had in Mexico, and we were able to see for ourselves the freshness and quality of ingredients. Hearing that we were disappointed not to be able to purchase fresh apricots that day, she brought out a handful of Okanagan apricots as a gift. We'd wanted to try the papusas that evening, but the cook had already gone home, so we were back the following night for a full meal of guacamole again, plus papusas (an El Salvador dish that's hard to get in Canada; if you haven't tried it, you should!), and mojito mocktails. The food was great, the service personable and helpful, the prices reasonable considering this is Mexican-style food prepared by people making Canadian wages. We'd go back. Lots.

“How can anyone rate this Number 1?”
Reviewed August 2, 2013

We agree with the reviews that slammed this place. There is no way this can or should be the No. 1 restaurtant in Kamloops. Even if there was only 1 restaurant, this would not be No. 1. We arrived, as many do, from the Rocky Mountaineer train. We made our way there mostly because we felt like Mexican food. We beat the rush as there were only two occupied tables (outside) and 1 inside. One of those 3 had received their dinners. We ordered margaritas. Here was the first problem. There was absolutely no tequila taste at all, just the semi-sweet lime mixture. In fact they were so weak, we asked our waitress if she had forgot to put tequila in it. She said they each had one shot. Whatever, they needed beefing up. So we ordered en extra shot to pour in. That led to problem two - service. It took 20 minutes and two trips to their bar to say where is my extra shot. For the dinner itself we waited another 1 1/2 hours!!! Three times I asked where is our diner and 3 times told it was in the queue. The restaurant by now was packed. Many seemed to be waiting long as well and some who arrived AFTER we did had gotten their food long before we did. But hey, we were in the queue.
Food wise, the quality was poor. We ordered tortilla soup which was very salty with not much of anything in it besides broth and a small amount of bacon and sliced advocado. The entree was chicken enchiladas, you know with the red ranchero sauce in rolled corn tortillas. Well, what we got was a folded up FLOUR tortilla, with no sauce, just bone dry with a little bit of diced tomatoes over top. No melted cheese either. This was NOT an enchilada, but a poor excuse of a burrito. The meager amount of chicken inside was bland and tasteless. Mexican food is one of the easiest cuisines to prepare quickly and even crowded Mexican joints generally get your food is a reasonably fair amount of time. Not here. Our whole ordeal was easily 2 1/2 hours. We stress this - for MEXICAN food! Do yourself a favor and skip this place. They have no clue how to make tasty food, mix a drink or provide service.

“Make a meal of the guacamole and margarita s !!!”
Reviewed July 30, 2013 via mobile

Our waitress/owner? Was charming, friendly and helpful. The guacamole is made right in front of you and just perfect. My chimichangas were quite good but my husband was a little disappointed in his pulled pork tacos. They seemed a bit dry

“Fish Tacos!”
Reviewed July 27, 2013 via mobile

Some of the best fish tacos I've ever had...and I've eaten my fair share. Family run restaurant, very nice people. If its busy and a little slow, have an extra 1800 Margarita! Delicious
