“Comfort at the side of a city”
Reviewed October 15, 2012

Comfortable, spotlessly clean, and in a quiet location within easy access of the city centre, the Kamloops Heritage Railway and walks along the river bank. The staff was most friendly, and the breakfast most adequate. A place to relax with outside terraces overlooking the river after a dipin the indoor swimming pool and jacuzzy.

Room Tip: Undoubtedly the rear of the hotel for views of the river and hill scenery.

Stayed here one night whilst on the Rocky Mountaineer from Calgary to Vancouver and this was the only part of the trip that was disappointing - Having stayed in a 5 star hotel in Calgary and with a 5 star planned for Vancouver this no star hotel was a let down - Small room with noisy ac - room on the upper floor and acess via small open walkway - wash unit in the bedroom - on site restaraunt was dark, overpriced and limited menu. Only good point were the views from the back of the place.

Drove from Banff to Kamloops. Had made the reservation based upon Trip Advisor info. Arrived at about 6PM (so we thought) and found one car in the parking lot. Oh! Did I make a mistake? Assigned a room on the 1st floor; asked for a room on the 2nd or 3rd floor; No; all booked; funny. Room was clean and comfortable.Turns out that that the Rocky Mountaineer train books the motel and was the reason for the unavailable rooms. Went next door for dinner to "Storms On The River" at 6:30PM (so we thought) and found out that it was only 5:30PM - had passed over to Pacific Daylight Time. Free WiFi out on the lawn after dinner. Great view of the river and the river traffic. Complimentary breakfast in the morning was very good - eggs, sausage, juice, toast, milk, coffee, etc. We ate at about 7:15AM and the train people had eaten earlier; the breakfast area was small, but tables were available outside, if needed. We enjoyed our stay and would stay here again if we are in Kamloops.

Overall, this was a good value place to stay during a road trip.

On the plus side, the place was clean and the staff were very helpful and friendly.

On the minus side, the room had a slight odour to it, like it perhaps used to be a smoker's room, or perhaps it was a little musty.

On balance, I would stay there again because you get what you pay for and this was a good value stop-over on the way to Vancouver.

We stayed here overnight while journeying on the Rocky Mountaineer. At first glance it looked a bit like a bunker but the rooms were very comfortable and clean and a good size. Everything worked and there was all the facilities we needed overnight. The staff were in the car park to greet us and to direct us to our rooms and were very helpful. It was just on the outskirts of Kamloops so was very quiet. It is situated on the river and we had a lovely view. Next door is a nice restaurant on the river where we had a lovely meal and it was very relaxing. On the whole we were pleasantly surprised. it is fine for a short stay.

This stop was a surprise after booking the trip on the Rocky Mountaineer. We did not know where we were staying until the Riverland was identified once we arrived in Calgary.

After a long day on the train (8 am to 8 pm) we arrived by bus at the Riverland and found a very small lobby, only an outside entrance to our room and no restaurant as part of the hotel.

The Mountaineer company had made things simple by providing room keys before hand so we did not have to deal with the lobby staff except to find out directions to the closest restaurant as we were quite a ways from the down town area and local facilities.

Our first stop was the only restaurant within walking distance and close to the Inn, Storms. They have a captive audience as most of us were from the Mountaineer train, no transportation, and too late to go anywhere else. Our crowd filled it up quickly with few locals to be found. The service was average, the food poor, the prices very high ($13.50 + for a cheese burger and fries), and the only good point was the patio which we did not take advantage of as it was dark.

The Riverland does offer a continental breakfast but we were gone to early to try it.

Our room was adequate, the Riverland had just been upgraded to Silver leaf by Mountaineer (but from our other locations did not deserve it due to location and lack of facilities), the balcony door lock did not work (managed to lock by playing with it and using a bar).

The saving grace was the view from our balcony (of green grass and the river) as the sun rose and we packed to get back on the train.

If we return to Kamloops I will do more research as there must be better hotels in the area and much closer to down town.

If you stay here transportation is a very important issue as it is quite a walk from anywhere else and a better restaurant is a must.

Room Tip: Not sure, they all have outside entrances??

I wouldn't recommend this for a long term stay but for a night or two you can't really get much better than the Riverland Inn. We stayed here a night on our way between Jasper AB and Vancouver. Great location on the river but not within comfortable walking distance to downtown - thankfully we had a car. Staff was very friendly and the included breakfast was quite good for the price of the hotel. Rooms were clean and featured a flat screen TV. Beds left something to be desired but you not terrible.
