We were told to make a stop here from a tourist information desk and we were not disappointed. We arrived into town during diner time, checked into our hotel and returned to the downtown core for the tour. There are painted foot steps along the sidewalk to guide you through the town and each totem pole has an information plate. It was very interesting

Driving from Victoria to Nanaimo, we saw a sign for "totems" in Duncan, so we decided to stop.

We picked up a map at the Visitor's Centre (very friendly, helpful staff and lots of materials)

After parking the car (free parking for the time we needed), we followed the footprints on the sidewalk around town to see all of the totems. For each totem, there are signs describing the woodcarvers and the totems' meanings. Very beautiful and interesting.

What a cute town, and what a novel approach to increase tourism to their area (and, no doubt, help their local businesses) -- we stopped and shopped at several stores on our travels.

Footprints on the sidewalks lead you to each totem, where there are signs describing the woodcarvers and the totems' meanings. You can view the totems up close and from across the streets. We enjoyed the variety and were impressed by the skill.

Driving back to Victoria from Nanaimo, we stopped in Duncan. Little did we know that is is known from its Totem Poles. Were we surprised. This is a great little city with poles on every street and in the center of town next to the Museum. Certainly worth visiting when in the area.
