Half the thrill of driving the Dempster Highway is just going further north than ever. The other half is the mountain scenery at the Tombstones.
To get there, pack a lunch and drive 20 minutes east of Dawson on the North Klondike highway and turn north onto Yukon 5, The Dempster. The road is decent enough for and ordinary sedan, provided you slow down and pull right when meeting traffic (prevents broken windshields). Though the nominal speed limit is 90 km/hr, you will drive more like 60-70 (35 to 40 mph). Watch for wildlife.
There is a good, easy hike leaving from the back of the campground, just over 1 hr r/t. You may borrow bear spray from the rangers at the interpretative center.
Be sure to drive north to the pass at about milepost 80. That is the continental divide between the Arctic Ocean and the Bering Sea. Also nearby is a small turnoff to the east leading to a microwave relay tower. Take it. Spectacular views come at the summit.
The Grizzly Creek hike is advertised as moderate, but it climbs 1,500 feet. Leave this one to the athletes under 30.
No phone. No food. No services. No nuthin'.
I got to 64 degrees, 34.7 minutes North. How about you?
