“Friendly Place to Check Out”
Reviewed September 4, 2013

Just spent a long weekend on Vancouver Island, most of it hanging out and making jewelry at a little bead shop in Chemainus while my husband played cricket. If you know cricket, you understand why I needed a diversion. If you don't, take my word for it, I needed a diversion. And Chemainus is perfect. The town is small enough to walk everywhere and there is plenty of FREE parking to allow you to do just that. There are a variety of shops and restaurants, as well as entertainment if you plan ahead. People are so friendly. The good weather helped, Labor Day weekend can be iffy, but it was spectacular. Even in the rain, Chemainus would be a fun stop.

“You Gotta Stop Here”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

Chemainus, BC, is a charming town with beautiful murals on the businesses. Take the guided horse drawn carriage to learn about the murals. There is a fee for the tour, $20. Have lunch in one of the restaurants or enjoy the beautiful park and lakeside. It is a must see when travelling on Vancouver Island.

“Good break in a road trip”
Reviewed August 28, 2013

We stopped for about half hour on our way up-island. The murals are lovely, follow the yellow foot prints on the sidewalk. There is plenty of parking, both along the main road and down by the free museum. There are some explanations on the murals and in the park and we didn't feel the need to pick up a guide. Just enjoyed the walk through town and admired the art. Plenty of public washrooms along the route as well.

“A History Lesson”
Reviewed August 12, 2013

If you want to learn abut the history of the Cowichan Valley, you have only to walk the streets of Chemainus where you can view almost fifty colourful murals depicting the past of the lumber town.
I bought a guidebook and read along but there are some explanations on plaques. For more detail, visit the free museum at Waterwheel Park.
