Review of Opal Hills

Opal Hills
Reviewed July 24, 2013

The Opal Hills Loop is a quite strenuous hike - especially the first part of the hike. You start out with going up a steep tree-clad hill for about a mile. Once you get above the tree line the views a really good and especially the part of the tour that goes around the Opal Hills is beautiful. Unfortunately, that part of the hike is relatively short and after that you're faced with a long descent in wooded terrain.

The Opal Hills trail is a loop trail starting at the upper Eastern parking lot at Lake Maligne. The first 2,5km are a steep climb over an elevation of 400 meters. Lots of switchbacks. The forested hillside provides shelter against the heat. We saw quite a few Elk along the way, and because they are not scared there was plenty of time to take pictures. After finally ending up in the meadow, there is the possibility to take a side trail up the hill. Take it! After about 400m you will have the greatest view of maligne lake and the rockies. After that it is all downhill for about 6km. First flat through the meadows (lots of marmots and squirrels) around two hills, with spectacular mountain vistas along the route, and then back down through the forest. We took 4 hrs including a lunch break at the top, but three hrs is feasible.

we hiked the opal hills in rainy weahter and never met another person. we did meet deer and elk on the trail at which point we decided to yield to them; great sighting ,but a little intimidating that the animals didn't seem scared, but a little aggressive. we hiked for hours and wanted to see Lake Maligne ,but the fog and rain made visibility impossible. great workout and you are off in the woods for sure.

Our favorite hike in Jasper! it's a tough slog up a very steep trail, with very switchbacks, but the views at the top are an incredible reward. The Alpine meadow is also worth the effort. It is impossibly beautiful. I had never seen anything like it, the whole experience is awe-inspring.

This trail tends to get closures due to the Grizzly bears, so pack bear spray with you. Quite a steep hike as the elevation gains until you reach the hanging valley. Try to catch this in late June when the flowers are in bloom. Beautiful sweeping vistas await you once you clear treeline. Sturdy hiking boots and hiking poles recommended. @jaspergeek
