Columbia Icefield Tour including the Glacier...
Reviewed July 9, 2013

It's an impressive glacier, to be sure, but the Visitor's Center is so commercialized and overrun with busloads of tourists that, for me at least, it loses much of it's impact.

$130 for my wife and son and I for <20 minutes outside on the icefield. The bus and then ice travel bus, was okay with some good information shared by the drivers. Very professional. But the machines all line up in a parking lot type of arrangement and you have to stay with a very small area..understandable for safety reasons, but underwhelming other than knowing you are on a 1000feet of ice and you are looking at glaciers...of course you can see that from the road, just further away. So a good experience, especially for kids, but not great value...i.e. when you can look back at the highway and see the cars going by, it takes away from the experience. I was here 39 years ago with the old style ice machines, the glacier was much bigger and you could walk around much more...so disappointed overall, especially for the money.

It is a wonderful experience to stand on the glacier and to understand how the landscape has been shaped by the moving ice over thousands of years. The huge tyred vehicles are quite impressive too. I would not recommend eating in the Icefield Centre restaurant at busy times as it is a scrum with all the visitors trying to get served at the same time.

The icefield is slowly melting and we noticed a huge difference since our last visit. They are revamping the visitor centre, which should be excellent when it's open. Unfortunately it was closed when we visited as they are still working on it. A trip on the ice is well worth it, but a bit pricey.

We first visited the Ice Field in 1964 and visited it several times since. It is distressing to see the extent to which the glacier has receded. The climb to the glacier is an easy hike over rough gravel and rocks but climb to the top and look over the edge of the glacier and realize it is the birthplace of several main Canadian rivers.
