“Decent hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 14, 2014

In Jasper overnight, the two of us with two other adults. So the kitchen room with separate bedroom was perfect, as it had a full bed in the "living room" There was a sofa bed too if you had one other adult or child. The hotel was quite old, but fairly well kept. The bed was ok, kinda soft. But everything was clean. Train was just outside, but that's true for pretty much all the hotels in Jasper. If you're a light sleeper, bring ear plugs. This is a motel style property where you park in front of your door. Actually quite convenient that way.

They had a restaurant right on premise which served (extra pay) a buffet breakfast in the morning. We didn't have it, but it looked decent.

OK place if you're spending a night or two in Jasper.

Stayed here for one night in room 150. Much bigger than I expected with separate TV area and fireplace. Good bedding. Newish bathroom with nice products. There was a big tour bus parked outside, but it didn't seem to busy or noisy for the night we stayed.

Our room was very small, but comfortable. The only window was facing the outdoor hallway, so we could not open the curtains due to privacy concerns. Unfortunately smoking is allowed in the outdoor hallway and every time we opened the window for fresh air, the cigaret smoke was filling up the room.
The hotel offeres a $12 buffet breakfast voucher at the restaurant next door. The breakfast was OK.
The location is quet and only 7 minutes walk to town.

Thank you for sharing your experience of your recent stay at the Tonquin Inn. We are definitely located in the quiet area of Jasper but still within walking distance to downtown. As all of our rooms are non-smoking, smoking outside is a challenge to control and I apologize for you being inconvenienced by other smoking guests. We hope to have another opportunity to welcome you back to the Tonquin Inn in the near future.

The good,
Lemon-aid at the from desk upon your arrival. Pine furniture, clean sheet, a full size fridge/freezer, stove, pots & pans. You really need this feature as the restaurants here are horrible & horrible expensive. Great towels.
Pool & exercise room.

The bad,
Location(right across the train tracks with trains going by often. It's ok if you don't need to sleep!). Also other guests constantly go by your windows & they try to peer through. Portable & super aloud air-conditioning unit. No breakfast.
The prices are the same or higher than much nicer towns such as Banff.

The ugly,
It has not had a major upgrade in decades. The countertops, carpets, doors,...all seem to be from the '80's???

Jasper pails in comparison to Banff. Dive right on by if you don't need to be in this depressing town.

Room Tip: Don't stay in this depressing town.

Thank you for posting your comments about your recent stay at the Tonquin Inn. We are glad to see that you enjoyed one of our family kitchen rooms and the other amenities that we offer. Unfortunately, as Jasper was founded as a railway town, trains do come through Jasper on a regular basis. Upgrading of our property is ongoing and we just completed a major upgrade of 98 rooms with new furniture and granite in the bathrooms. Thank you again for your comments and we hope to welcome you back on your next visit to Jasper.

This hotel is in a great location to explore Jasper National Park and walk to local restaurants after a day of touring. Rooms are adequate but a tad tired. Nothing special about furnishings and amenities are ho-hum. Breakfast was included and it was nothing to write home about. In fact, second day we skipped it altogether. Front desk personnel could be friendlier and more helpful. We found the "housekeeping" staff to be extremely helpful and committed to assisting.

Of note: one of our keys wasn't working, the individual that went in to get the key re-magnetized, who was not on the reservation, only had to say the room number to get the job done! No ID or verification completed. We found this to be somewhat alarming.

Overall, I'd stay elsewhere in Jasper. There appears to be quite a selection.

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments about your recent stay at the Tonquin Inn. We were glad to read that you enjoyed our location, however, we were very concerned about the service you received at the Front Desk. We have very strict policies regarding the issuing of keys. Please be assured that your comments have been forwarded to the Assistant GM to ensure that the Front Desk are following the proper procedures.

Bedding is clean, but forget trying to sleep. We were given a 2 queen bed suite on the second floor in the building facing the tracks. The unit was right by the stairs (no elevator) and we could hear people passing our suite to get to theirs well into the night. The train kept passing, at least every hour it seems, if not more regularly. We could hear the people above us moving around well into the night, the soundproofing between units is non-existent. The air-conditioning unit was so loud, we could not even use it for white noise, and had to suffer through a 30 degrees Celsius temperature. I went to bed at 10 pm, it's 11:45 pm as I type this, and the fact that I'm up writing this speaks for itself. Paid $225 plus tax.

We are truly sorry that we were unable to meet your expectations during your stay with us. Jasper was founded as railway town and the trains still pass through Jasper on a regular basis which can be disconcerting for some guests. The Tonquin Inn is one of the few hotels in Jasper that provide AC units, which may not always be the best solution, however can be quite welcomed when it's 30 degrees or more. Thank you for taking the time to post your comments and we look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit to Jasper.

Stayed here for 1 night at the end of June in room 358 (top floor) which contains a queen sized bed and has a large terrace. We seem to find ourselves at the Tonquin at least once a year as we pass through Jasper.

The Tonquin Inn is a pretty good place to stay. It's motor inn style, so you park your car and climb exterior stairs to reach your room. The rooms are pretty much what you'd expect. They are smallish, well laid out, and clean. Nothing fancy, but much better than your run of the mill motor inn.

The sink and mirror are in the room with the bed, and the toilet and shower are in the bathroom. If you want to wash your hands after you go to the bathroom before touching doorknobs and walking across the room, you're out of luck.

A buffet hot breakfast was included with our room. Breakfast was just okay. It's served from 7 until 10, and we showed up at 9:30, so I guess we should have expected the bacon to be gone (no bacon, darn it) and the eggs Benny to be dry. No fruit, either. Service was friendly, though.

I'm never quite sure what to make of the Tonquin. It's definitely no-frills, but we come back every year because it's comfortable and I guess we like it. The prices have gone up, though. I think the room was overpriced.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the 3rd floor so you don't have to listen to your upstairs neighbours.
