It is difficult to write a short review. This is the perfect blend of a quiet, natural setting with wonderful accommodation, and exceptional service. It is the Rocky Mountain retreat you fanaticize about but seldom find. We felt welcomed from the moment we arrived -- everyone was genuinely friendly, interested, and helpful. The lodge has retained all of the original charm, and has been thoughtfully upgraded and decorated to provide subdued luxury. Our lovely room, with fireplace, actually had comfortable chairs and a well placed reading light. It was a room where you wanted to spend time. The balcony had a breathtaking view of the valley with snow covered mountains in the background. Watching the sun set over the mountains was magical. Our room and the common areas were immaculate. The cozy lounge with original fireplace is a wonderful place to curl up with a book and a coffee or glass of wine, to write postcards, peruse the wine list, or just dream and enjoy the view. A perfect place to spend a lazy November day. The adjacent “library” with a fascinating collection of old and new books, board games, and more comfortable chairs, was an unexpected treat and provided a great excuse to just be lazy.

The restaurant was superb and the service perfect. There were a number of local residents there both evenings – always a good sign. The menu should appeal to any taste and the food was delicious and perfectly presented. It is seldom that we can find such an appealing selection of appetizers (also suitable for a light meal for me). There was a creative choice of entrees for my husband, and an irresistible dessert menu. The extensive wine list was a wonderful read. With a little advice we decided to choose an unfamiliar wine variety from a region we knew, at a very reasonable price, and now have a new favorite.

This was a nostalgic visit, to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary, and it exceeded all of our expectations. We first met when I stayed here on a ski package to Jasper and decided it would be fun to return for the occasion. We will definitely continue to return in future. We might ski or hike, or just enjoy relaxing instead.

We stayed at the Overlander Mtn. Lodge late Aug 2009 and I'd love to go back! The lodge dates back to the thirties and is made from timber. Staff is friendly and food is great. Since the lodge is located just outside Jasper Nat. Park the price is very reasonable. The lodge is located 35-45 min. away from Jasper, but since Jasper was crowded, it was worth it. Also, the road from the lodge to Jasper is lovely.

Dinners in the restaurant are pricy, so we picked the lounge area 10 feet away from the restaurant area and had dinners at almost half price. Not many menu options, but the food is lovely. Breakfast (not included) is fine though not many options.

The room was fine - though not fantastic. Don't know how it would be in wintertime. We had a garden room so no impressive views. Views from the rooms to the other side must be great, however, the price goes up. It looks a bit old, but learning how old the lodge is, I felt "oh, well, this is part of it", and I didn't expect it to be superior.

I'd be happy to go back...

The Overlander Mountain Lodge was the most delightful surprise of our three week trip in Alberta, Canada this past May. We stayed most of the time in Banff (which was wonderful) and then spent a few days in Alberta. Having heard that the road from Banff to Alberta was one of the most beautful in North America, and possibly the world, I was very excited to view the scenery. As we set out from Banff the clouds began to form and within an hour we were driving in near white-out conditions. There weren't many cars on the road (and almost none on the opposite lane of the road, which had not been plowed). This was somewhat disconcerting since we were totally unprepared for such weather, and it looked like the other people on the road with us were in the same boat. As we went further we wondered if we should turn back, but the worsening road conditions convinced us we should stay in our little "caravan" with five others cars and hope for the best. As the weather had done all week, we eventually started seeing some blue sky and then more and more until we had some of the most glorious views you can imagine. We perservered on and eventually made it to the town of Jasper -- not much to look at, but we were happy to be there. Our hotel, the Overlander Mountain Lodge, was about a half hour outside Jasper. After a beautiful drive, with more clouds forming, and more snow predicted, we arrived at the Overlander. We checked in, and were warmly greeted and made to feel welcome and well taken care of. The lobby was really beautiful with a big, roaring fireplace and comfy seating -- it was perfect. The pictures do not really do the room justice, as ours was nicely decorated, with a nice fireplace and a VERY comfortable bed. We had big windows and a rustic balcony with a FABULOUS view, showcasing the 6" of snow that had just fallen. Snow and all, it was breathtaking, and I can't imagine anyone complaining about not having a TV! When we came down to dinner we were not prepared for the absolutely-to-die-for gourmet dinner. We opted to get the "package" with wine (see their website) and we were totally pleased we had. Our meals were some of the best food we have ever had -- truly unbelievable that you would find that quality of food in such a remote location. But even the wonderful food (can't believe that someone would complain about the continental breakfast, which is far superior to any continental breakfast I have had any where in the world), and lovely room pales in comparison to the EXCEPTIONAL staff at the Overlander. Not only was the server at dinner (Natalie) professional, considerate, and interested -- but not hovering; the staff was simply wonderful without exception. When we mentioned to the receptionist (Laura?) that we were concerned about the road back to Banff being closed the next day because 6 MORE inches of snow was forecast, she started researching the weather for us on the internet. Other staff members came over and offered to help get us information. We wanted to change to a 4-wheel drive rental car and one of the servers checked that out for us. Everyone was just SO helpful and kind. The next morning (after MORE snow) when we came down the receptionist had ALREADY checked with the ranger stations along the road back to Banff and happily told us the road was open and had already been cleared (which turned out to be 100% accurate). Everyone we came in contact with went that extra mile for us and beyond. The staff seemed to genuinely like working with each other and they all just pitched in to do whatever they could to help. It is no surprise that this is a family owned lodge -- it was clear in their friendliness and genuine concern for their guests. Sorry to have gone on so long about this, but I have RARELY been so impressed by a lodging experience as I was here. I would recommend the Overlander without question. It was simply fantastic! Beautiful views, fabulous food, and wonderful pampering. Thanks to the staff for being so kind and helpful to us -- you really saved the day!

I had the privilege of hosting two guests from Texas this summer. We drove through the beautiful Canadian Rockies. Our last stop before Edmonton was the Overlander Lodge at the base of the mountains by the entrance to Jasper. It is a beautiful log lodge with wood floors, elegant decore, a huge stone fireplace to sit around and have that night cap, elegant but comfortable furnishings and a wonderful restaurant overlooking the expanse of mountains for miles around. The beds were incredibly comfortable!I appreciated not having the distractions of a phone or television. The staff  were professional yet friendly.Any needs one has, they bend over backwards to assist with ones comfort.Loved the atmosphere, the food, the peacefullness, and the scenery.Darlene Konduc

We had a great experience at The Overlander Mountain Lodge. Rode up on my BMW bike & stayed one night. The food was truly amazing, beef tenderloin to die for and pecan pie out of this world. They have the largest wine list I've ever seen. The dining area overlooks the Rocky Mountains and our room also overlooked the mountains, spectacular view! Very accomodating and Great Service too. Miette Hot Springs is just a short drive. If you are a Bike Enthusiast, you have to take the trip up to the hot springs. Lots of winding roads and 20km/hr turns. On a bike it's a blast. Sulpher Mountain, also at Miette has great hiking trails and the Hot Springs were also enjoyed.

I stayed at the Overlander this past August with my husband, 3 sons, and my mother. We stayed in the Executive Chalet. It has three bedrooms and plenty of space for a family with active children. The beds were comfortable, the bathrooms very clean, and the kitchen well equipped. We loved having our own grill to prepare supper.
My husband and I had dinner at the Lodge one night while Grandma watched the boys. The dinner and service were excellent. The wine list is HUGE. I would highly recommend eating there if you get the chance.
The Overlander is outside of Jasper National park so it is a bit of a drive but a great ride to see some wildlife. Between the Overlander and Jasper are a few places to go see like the Miette Hot Springs, the Maligne Canyon, and Maligne Lake.
You are also fairly close to Hinton to pick up groceries or other items that you amy need.

My husband surprised me with a stay at the lodge the day after we were married and it was the most wonderful, romantic gift...although it wasn't long enough. The food is superb, the service is 5* and we loved the fact that there were no phones and no TV. It was our time away from everything and I am planning our 6 month anniversary as we speak. Thank you to the staff and management of Overlander, but thank you, my love (Raul) for such a special gift.
