“This is not in Jasper!”
Reviewed July 22, 2013

In the middle of nowhere. You actually have to leave Jasper Park to get here. A good 40 minute drive. Unfortunately it is not far enough away from the highway - so you hear traffic all night if you open the windows - which you must open because there is no air conditioning. Front desk check-in was helpful - although we had to go back to get more help getting on-line as she didn't have the right password. We were in one of the 4 "lodges" in a block - a bit musty smelling when we arrived... open windows to hear the traffic. Very simple space - had to let the hot water run for several minutes before we got any to take a shower. Didn't eat so can't review the restaurant. Not cheap for just a night's stay ($189) in the middle of nowhere. Did see caribou along the drive.

Newly renovated, clean and quiet. The staff are friendly and service was excellent. I would stay again and recommend Overlander lodge. It has an extensive wine list and a nice selection of delicious food. The view from the main lodge is death taking.

on the edge of Jasper Park and not in the park, its a good hour plus drive to Jasper.
our cabin was basic and the floor was on a slope so much so that the bed slide away from the wall!
the night we were there they had a function and could not provide us with a meal, It was a pity that they had not e mailed to tell us as it meant a drive into Hinton which we didn't want a we had been driving all day.!

Room Tip: Make sure the restaurant is open!

We booked a night at the Overlander after looking online and finding other places in the area booked. We choose this location based on their website and reviews, it seemed like a good choice and I found the pricing comparable to other places had looked at in Jasper. The location is remote but beautiful! We found our cabin clean and comfortable for 2 people and loved the setting. Yes, better wifi and TV may have been nice but it was nice to unwind and get away from it all since we were only there one night it was fine. The restaurant was wonderful! Again, I found it priced appropriately.
The setting is beautiful, staff exceptionally friendly and helpful so if you'r looking for a place to get away from it all this is the place for you! We were happy that we choose The Overlander!

The property is wonderful. In a world that is racing far too fast this lodge is an oasis of calm. Lovely room, wonderful staff, and amazing food. They have worked really hard to create a calm and serene atmosphere - a perfect place to "unwind".

I struggled a bit with how to review the Overlander Mountain Lodge. The difficulty I had was about value for money. The property is nice, the cabin we had was comfortable and the setting is quiet and beautiful. I felt that it was very overpriced, however I feel that part of this is "buyer beware" and I have to take responsibility for making the booking in the first place, without knowing the property and what we would be getting for our money.

We rented a 3 bedroom cabin that was very roomy and comfortable. When I have stayed in comparable lodging, I have been happy to pay in the range of $275-$350/night in peak season as it accommodated 5 of us and gave us a kitchen which makes the stay more economical. If this cabin had been priced in that range, I would have given 4 stars, but their rate was $500/night and I would expect much more for that price. I debated whether the Overlander deserved 2 or 3 stars, and because it fell short in several areas and was so overpriced, it gets 2 stars. (Wow, what a big fuss over a tripadvisor review, huh?)

First, the good points. The property was very quiet with beautiful mountain views. The reception staff were very pleasant and efficient. Our 3 bedroom cabin was spacious, clean and comfortable. It includes a deck at front and back and a gas BBQ.

Now, the points I'm griping about (value-wise). The kitchen is minimally equipped. There are just enough pots and pans to get by with, but if we were staying longer or preparing more elaborate meals, we'd be washing pots and utensils halfway through the meal preparation (no dishwasher). The decor and finish in the kitchen is worn. There was not enough light in the sitting room - very difficult to read in the evening. No TV reception (there is a DVD player - bring your own DVDs). You can get a weak wi-fi spilling over from the office, but this was slow and spotty. The promo material says that this contributes to "getting away from it all" and disconnecting from electronics. That's a nice sentiment, but that should be my choice. For the price they are charging, I would expect full satellite TV and solid wi-fi, and I will decide whether I use it or not.

It's a solid 30-40 minute drive to Jasper, so not really convenient, although many nice hikes are located between the hotel and Jasper, so we didn't always have to drive into Jasper for our day activities. We didn't eat at the restaurant. Looked at the menu and the prices were very high.

Overall, this is a nice property, but I didn't feel we received adequate value for money. Suggest you look elsewhere.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for the time and effort you put in to make a solid review.

I would like to point out that a complete overhaul of the kitchen is planned for this fall. The fact that you did not have enough kitchen utensils is unacceptable and really affects the experience. We have now stocked up on those and there should be enough to feed an army.

as for the tv goes: all chalets have satellite tv and chalet 132 where you stayed has that as well. I am sorry that you did not make us aware of any issues you had with that because we would have been more than happy to have solved that.

We have also changed the wifi so that chalet 132 now has full signal.

I hope that we can welcome you again at the Overlander Mountain Lodge in the future.

I had always wanted to stay at the Overlander just outside Jasper National Park. We reserved the room online and perhaps did not check out the type of accommodation as thoroughly as we should have. Check in was fine. The main Lodge and reception desk was impressive and we looked forward to our stay. we were booked into a rustic cabin and that is when it became unimpressive. There was no TV, no phone, no air conditioning and no information about the lodge or the area. The cabin had a love seat for two, a small table with two chairs, a small fridge, stove set up as a kitchen unit. The bedroom was small with no windows and no way to circulate air except for a fan above the bed. We were told that all the units were similar. The unit was dark, in the trees with no view of anything except the adjacent cabin. The unit was identical to a small town motel except the motel would have had more to offer at a lot cheaper rate. The restaurant was attractive and the view was great but it was expensive. If you like a rustic atmosphere and you are willing to pay, then this might be for you. I will never stay here again!

Room Tip: Not saure if there is a "good" room to choose! At least ask for a room with a view.

Dear Guest,

I am surprised to hear that you were unaware of the amenities provided at our Lodge. It clearly states that we have no TV’s or telephones in ANY of our room types. We want guests to unplug, relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. We do guarantee WIFI access in the Main Lodge and we are working hard to provide WIFI outside of our Main Lodge.

As for the information about the surroundings, we have a information desk at the lobby and our front desk staff is happy and willing to tell you about all the beautiful activities in the area.

You stayed in a kitchenette and the room size is over 300sq ft (excluding the bathroom) which is not small by any means. There is enough space for a pull out sofa, a kitchenette unit a table and 2 chairs and a queen-sized bed. The unit is surrounded by trees, something that you did not like, it does however fit the surroundings of nature.

As far as the Restaurant goes: everything that the Chef has created is made from scratch with fresh ingredients. Our menu is on our website and the prices are listed as well. We offer mains starting at $25 up to $42. Our lounge menu gives you the option to have dinner for less than $20 per person, in our opinion very acceptable prices.

We strive to give our guests an experience, not just a bed, and i am sorry that you did not feel that you received value for money. Please contact me at the lodge so that I could discuss with you.
