Owner description: Our Historical Gallery features many unique artefacts including David Thompson’s musket balls, the ice axe from Mt. Alberta and one of Curly Phillips’ canoes. The exhibits in our Showcase & Alcove Galleries change several times a year. These galleries feature exhibits which are culturally and historically significant to the area. In the summer of 2017 we are featuring 2 new exhibits, "Cutting Ties" in Jasper National Park. From 1920 - 1927 over 500,000 railroad ties were cut in the Whirlpool Valley in the Athabasca Pass and floated down the Athabasca River through Jasper National Park. Come and learn about this very little unknown history that took place in Jasper National Park. June 9 - November 9, 2017. BEARS IN THE ALLEY, this exhibit runs April 20th - October 1st, 2017. Read about funny and not so funny stories about local encounters with hungry bears who roamed the alleys of Jasper breaking into garbage cans in search of food. Visit our gift shop for the best selection of books about Jasper and the surrounding area and for locally made products. Summer hours: 10-5 pm daily. Winter hours: 10-5 pm Thursday-Sunday.

“OK for some local history - and for Marilyn Monroe when in local filming!”
Reviewed June 25, 2013

Nice small museum giving reasonable coverage of local history in the space available. It is about 15 minutes from the train station, a bit away from the town centre. The town does not seem to publicise it too well - they should - visitors may not be aware of it and can miss an interesting place. OK to spend an hour and a bit, specially on a wet day - which is what we did. Fans of Marilyn Monroe will see one room dedicated to her and the filming of 'River of No Return'.

“Probably too small to really carry out its mission”
Reviewed June 16, 2013

This was a nice little museum to spend an hour in, and the woman at the desk was super-friendly. It's a pretty small place that gives an OK summary of local history and a lot of space to Marilyn Monroe's time here in 1953 to film "River of No Return."

“History from town”
Reviewed February 27, 2013

This also small museum is very good to see, they have all the history from when the town has started, first house build, first hotel, fire dept. etc... the good thing is that they have pictures for all that; very neat and walking distance from train station

“Hidden Gem”
Reviewed August 12, 2012

The Museum is located at the back of Jasper, near the head of the Town Trail, and across from the Activity Centre and Pool. It's an easy walk from the train station or info centre, but most tourists dont take the trouble to find it. They should. There is a lot of interesting history to Jasper, and the gifts sold in the shop there (same as the one's sold in other shops in town) are tax-free. Shopping at the Museum Gift Shop is an automatic 5% saving. I loved the train exhibit.

“Well worth the visit.”
Reviewed June 13, 2012

This little gem is tucked away behind the activity centre in Jasper. It provides a good historical overview of the region and its development. It includes a geological summary, the important role of first nations, Metis and the role of European settlers with extensive information about the fur trade, exploration routes, the Hudson Bay, North West Company and the unique individuals that added their names and accomplishments to this region. THe small gift shop has an extensive collection of books ranging from children's literature to hiking information and historical fiction, as well as some art.
