“Hotel is overpriced and I would class it as 3 star”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 18, 2006

The hotel was the most expensive hotel we stayed at on our holiday to Alberta and the Rockies. The standard rooms are big but are in need of updating and the windows replacing as they wouldn’t have stopped a burglar, the only selling points to the room are; a digital safe, iron and ironing board, rickety air-conditioning unit and free car-parking. The room was your typical American style room with twin double beds and it had two wash basins, one in the bathroom and one outside the bathroom, which is a good job as the tap in the bathroom just trickled water and it took ages for the basin to drain and the bath took ages to drain as well, the reason could have been because we were on the ground floor, but we think it was more like they needed Dyno Rod to unblock their pipes! This hotel was the only hotel all holiday that had air-conditioning, but then Canada don’t get many heat-waves, the downside is that the air-conditioning is one of those noisy units which are fine during the day, but impossible to share a room with at night and there’s nothing more annoying than neighbouring rooms having their air-conditioning unit droning all night which is what happened! The hotel is out of town so you need a car to go into town for an evening meal, but then again all the hotels seem to be located down this end of Jasper. You might think when you’ve driven all day that you will just eat in the hotels restaurant, but even though the receptionist and the booklet in the room says the restaurant stays open till 11pm it didn’t, because we went to the restaurant at 9.35pm to be told they don’t take any more new orders after 9.30pm, so does that mean it takes them over an hour to cook the meal? Receptionist staff are clueless and don’t know what they are doing, I think that’s because they are all new starters hence the vacancy board outside the hotel, and while we were waiting to check in a family had arrived on the Rocky Mountain Train and the receptionist didn’t have a clue if their cases had arrived, apparently she’d been too busy to notice! The first morning we were staying there we went white water rafting and came back to our room to get a shower, the cleaner then decided she’d skip our room so we had to ask reception for clean towels and make the beds ourselves!

  • Liked — Air-conditioning during the day
  • Disliked — Needs refurbishing and the staff need training
  • Tips/Secrets — Carpark gets pretty full at night make sure you get back before everyone else does!

Man they say they are doing renovations - not sure where the money is going?? The restuarant was okay though was pissed I had to get my own food.

The rooms were super hot and uncomfortable and the yellow walls looked like someone blind picked them out!

This hotel was a complete disappointment & a dismal finale to our Canadian Rockies Excursion. It was a disappointment in that it was not what it was portrayed to be on its' internet website and so far from being a 4 star hotel (also noted on the website) that we couldn't help but laugh. As we made our way to our room in the dim lit, disgusting orangey-puke painted hallways, we hoped this was not an indication to the condition of our room. Unfortunately, it was. The room was totally dated (mid 70's - ish) with patterned and ripped pearlized wallpaper, rust colored carpet, early 80's light fixtures & furniture, and rust colored floor tile on the bathroom floor...the list goes on--oh yeah, and counters that were so low, one would get a backache from bending over to use the sink. We got this dump all for a mere $314.00/night!!! The hotel staff were young kids that informed us that the hotel rooms have been renovated--with new beds. They handled our concerns with a glazed "whatever" look in their eye while nodding and saying "Yeah, uh, that's what there is in Jasper, older stuff". Needless to say, we were ripped off and will NEVER stay there again and would not recommend it to anyone that wants anything higher than a 2 1/2 star hotel rating. If everything else in Jasper wouldn't have been booked we would have left in a heartbeat, but were forced to stay as we had been driving for four hours and had 3 little children with us. We all itched all night long!

We checked in to this hotel on June 10 and left immediately, it is not a four star hotel in any way, it is shabby, dirty, decrepid and smells bad too. The rooms are depressing, dark, and very old fashioned, the bathrooms need to be modernised and have new sanitary fittings, The corridors have peeling paint and obvious repairs on the walls the carpet is old and fraying, it is really dark and not a place to stay if you expect any sort of luxury or a normal four star hotel
When we left the mangement kindly did not charge us anything which was very decent, but they could see that we were quite upset at the state of the place. Please dont expect a four or even a three star hotel, it is just not up to standard

Booked through expedia at the AAA rate of 229.00. When we booked it listed the room as a "deluxe suite" . When we checked in the "deluxe suite" was really just a standard room at the standard rate. A small room. Needless to say, I was quite disappointed, having come from very tiny rooms for the first part of our Canadian Rockies Anniversary vacation at the Rimrock and at the Chateau Lake Louise (see reviews separately). The front desk apologized upon my questioning of the term "deluxe suite" and told me that all of their rooms are called "suite", but that she understood my disappointment and offered to upgrade us to a King Executive Suite (the Crown Suite). This, in my opinion, raised the rating from a 2 to a 4. The suite is gorgeous, with a king sized bed, track lighting, a huge screen flat tv--60"?; the bath suite has a shower and a jaccuzi bathtub big enough for two. Comp. robes included. The sitting area is also quite large and semi-separate from the sleeping area. Very nice, indeed.

The in-hotel restraunt was very good and reasonable. A brasserie style restaurant, which for dinner has a fixed price of $21 for two courses (soup/salads/appetizer; entree with potato/vegetable or entree/dessert); $29 for all three courses. We had seared tuna with the salad bar (which was excellent). We are vegetarians (fish eating), so the fact that there was at least one veg. soup. and most of the salad bar choices were vegetarian. The hotel is a very long walk into the main part of town, which can be good--or bad. The hotel also has free wireless access if you bring your laptop.

I liked this hotel although some of our group had very different feelings however I found everything to my liking. The service was good, the bedroom was spacious and the food was excellent. However to get good food you had to eat early. Without exception everyone who ate around 6.00pm had wonderful food but those that left it until 8.00pm were VERY disappointed so my advice is to eat early!

What a dump!

To call this property a chateau is a blatant falsehood. Chateau Jasper is not just overpriced—it is misrepresented, billing itself a luxury accommodation. No effort has been spared by the management to economize—at the expense of their guests.

The property appears to have been built in the 1960s to mid-70s, and there has been no attempt to maintain the motel. The carpeting on the elevator door is ripped at the threshold, causing a tripping hazard. The room’s furniture appeared original to the building, showing many scratches, chips, and stains. The bathroom has never been updated—the faux-marble counters are very low, a style popular 30-40 years ago, but one which requires a person of average height to bend uncomfortably to brush their teeth or wash their face. The tile is cracked and dirty, and grout has been replaced in spots by white caulk; the plastic walls of the tub are scratched and worn. The porcelain trays holding shampoo, etc. are chipped, and the small towels are shabby. The beds were firm and comfortable, but the bedding was very tattered. Adding to the décor were patched and unpainted holes in the hallway walls.

The air conditioner didn’t work; the maintenance man told us the units were so old that parts were no longer made. He replaced a drive belt with an O-ring as a temporary expedient; the air conditioner rattled all night, making it difficult to sleep. We asked the front desk staff if our room was unusually problematic, and they responded that it was the same as all the others.

During our two-day stay, the fire alarm went off randomly, and the front desk staff didn’t know why—this seems a regular occurrence; see the other TripAdvisor ratings. There was no hot water for a day.

We booked through Orbitz, which rates Chateau Jasper a 4-star property. Orbitz’s description of the property (written by the hotel itself) is simply untrue:

"Within the town site of Jasper, we are the only 3-Diamond AAA/CAA award winning property. (NOT TRUE—THERE ARE SEVERAL) We offer fine accommodations and amenities (UNTRUE) complemented by personable staff who always extend a warm and sincere welcome.
Each of our 119 deluxe guest rooms and suites are beautifully appointed (UNTRUE) and retains the charm you would expect to find in a home in the majestic Rockies. (YOU’D HAVE TO THINK MOTEL 6 CHARMING—IT’S AN UPGRADE FROM CHATEAU JASPER).
Enjoy dining in Sorrentinos Dining Room or unwind after a day of skiing in our indoor swimming pool and whirlpool spa.
We are certain that the Chateau Jasper standards of service will bring you back time and time again."

In my opinion, Orbitz and other travel agents are complicit in this fraud, perhaps because of fat commissions paid by Decore Hotels (their other Jasper properties are dumps, too—look at user ratings at TripAdvisor and other sources). The four-star rating on the Orbitz site is a barefaced lie; of the four photos posted on the site, only one is of a guest room, and the photo is dark and carefully contrived to hide an appalling lack of maintenance and cleanliness. I’ve posted photos, which actually make the room look much better than it is. Chateau Jasper appears to survive on unsuspecting tour groups (whose operators must be able to negotiate dirt-cheap prices for this hovel), as well as individual tourists. Repeat customers must be desperate, intellectually bereft, or perhaps nonexistent.

The falsification of Chateau Jasper’s quality points out the uselessness of travel guides like AAA/CAA (which gives the property a 3-star rating), the self-serving distortions of ratings at online travel sites like Orbitz, and the importance of unbiased user ratings. Had we looked at TripAdvisor first, we never would have booked this dump.
