“Great for NYE”
Reviewed January 1, 2012

This was a great hotel for my NYE trip. The price was good, the service was friendly and the rooms were big, clean and comfortable. The outside looks a little dated, but the inside is very good and the facilities are very nice and convenient. The Sky Lounge was a great bar and the hotel restaurant had good food and was reasonably priced as well. The hotel is a little bit outside of the downtown part of Jasper, but only a 10 minute walk or so. I definitely recommend using this hotel, no complaints here!

We spent two weekend days in Jasper in October - between the Summer tourist and Winter ski seasons. Our room was a comfortable suite with 2 beds, a pull out sofa, and a small kitchenette for under $100/night. This was perfect for traveling with two small children. The hotel is in a quiet area, but is still close to all amenities in Jasper. The restaurant provided ample portions at very reasonable prices, and the upstairs loung was a comfortable place to sit back and watch a hockey game.

Room Tip: Avoid the 1st floor which is more like a basement. Ask for a room on one of the ends of the hotel as...

I have nothing positive to say regarding this hotel, I had the following issues.

Hotel is dated - looks like it was built in the 60's and not upgraded since.
Hot tubs smelt like they were 50% chlorine!
Room smelt like someone had been smoking in it, guy came and sprayed a nauseating vanilla scented air freshener in the room, I made a complaint but the reception staff were not interested.
The crockery in the restaurant was dirty, which just isn't right anywhere.

The only positive was the room was a good size, however we spent as much time as possible OUT of the hotel/room and left at 5am the next morning after being woken up by the people on the floor above running a bath or similar.

Overall not a great place to stop on honeymoon compared to the other 7/8 hotels we stayed in.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the top floor so you can annoy the ones below you.

Thank you for your comments. The Lobstick Lodge was built in 1968 and since then we have made numerous changes with the most recent being: Three years ago we finished a complete renovation of our guest room bathrooms and our pool area. Two years ago we worked on upgrading our lighting and bedding and this past year saw new hallway carpets, wall coverings and artwork and flat screen TV’s in our Kitchen suites. We are in the process of putting new flat screen TV”s in the rest of our rooms and we are planning new Lobby carpet for the Spring.

In Alberta, recreational facilities such as pools and hot tubs are regulated and reviewed weekly by the provincial government and we have not had a negative report of either over or under chlorination in the past year.
Our hotel has a no smoking policy. As each guest checks-in they must read and sign the no smoking policy, and if smoking is apparent a recovery fee is charged. I am sorry that the room you were in had a smell and we did not react as well as we have been trained to do.
As you indicated, there is no excuse for dirty plates and I have taken steps to ensure this does not happen again.

Stayed 2 nights September 2011. Check in average, staff not too helpful. Large room with kitchen/dining and separate bedroom. Well appointed small bathroom. Noisy from next door when in kitchen/dining area - connecting door didn't help. Quiet in bedroom, which was at back of hotel. Location is at one end of town, so you have to walk or drive to main shopping/dining areas. Used the ground floor restaurant on first night - food and service average. Ate out second night - quite a few restaurants downtown. Had breakfast at Papa George's on Connaught - recommended.

This is an older hotel showing some of its wrinkles (like me) but not altogether unpleasant. Not everything works perfectly (I changed my door key four times!) but our room was spacious and pretty agreeable. Everything was clean, but too bad breakfast isn't included since the place is not super-cheap. But is anything in Jasper? As others have noted, the hotel is on the outskirts of this fairly small town, but if you like to walk this isn't a problem. We had a kitchenette in our room so we walked into town for groceries, for instance. We were there off-season, so parking wasn't a problem in the centre of town when we needed it at night. Since many of the hotels and lodges were closed for the season when we were there, and because we were traveling with a pet, this worked for us but in other circumstances I might look for something more interesting - although the kichenette is a big attraction.

We stayed at The Lobstick Lodge in early October as part of the Thomas Cook 'Canadian Pioneer' tour and were pleasantly surprised. We were given a large suite on the ground floor near the restaurant. The rooms were spotlessly clean and well furnished with everything we needed.A safe would have been welcome but none of the seven hotels we stayed at on this trip had that facility in the rooms. The restaurant was comfortable and inviting with a good selection of local and international dishes and a friendly and happy staff. We love Jasper and have stayed in several hotels there over the last ten years and think that the Lobstick is among the best in its star rating.Town is a good twenty minutes walk away but with scenery like that it is a privilege. While there take a taxi ride to Jasper Park Lodge, another jewel in Jasper's crown!

Room Tip: A low rise hotel so you cannot realy get a bad room,a lovely bar/lounge on first floor with fantasti...

Lobstick is one of the original mountain lodges and still going strong. Although the age of the hotel is showing in the carpet and the creaking floor boards of the foyer, the entire hotel is very clean and in good shape. The bathrooms have been updated with a deeper tub for those that prefer baths to showers. The shower itself has those newer curved shower curtain rods so it feels roomy when showering. Hotel staff were very friendly and helpful.
Beds were very comfortable with extra pillows and blankets in the room. Found the room to be a bit chilly, so turned up the thermostat. Unfortunately, every half hour or so, the baseboard heater would make a loud bang, loud enough to wake you.
My room had a kitchenette and table that seated 6. The kitchen comes with a full fridge, sink, stove, microwave, dishes and cooking pots and pans; everything you need to make a meal.
The restaurant was clean and overlooked the front street. We ate breakfast there which was a buffet. There are two types available, full buffet and continental. The full buffet includes the hot items, such as eggs, bacon, etc. the continental was more than sufficient for breakfast as it included toast, pastries, fruit, cereal, yogurt, juice and nuts. Dinner was very good. The portions were very generous and the meals were well presented and flavorful. As with all touristy towns, the prices were higher than what you would expect, but the prices were no higher in the hotel than in town.
The lounge was very nicely done. A fireplace and strategic seating made for intimate gatherings. The wi-fi internet access was spotty at best and generally unusable for me. I did not use the pool or any other amenities.
As we were there in late October, there were not many people around as this time is the shoulder season between summer and skiing season. Lobstick is on the NE edge of town, away from the main road so it is quiet, but a fair walk to shopping. Would not want to walk back carrying all my purchases, but there is plenty of taxi service in Jasper.
