We had a great time and enjoyed out stay. The hotel staff was great, the food was also very good. The views were breathtaking. Our room however, was much less than we expected. The hotel did not meet my expectations of a Fairmont?

In league with its luxury hotel competition, and beset amongst mountains and fauna grazing closely one would think Fairmont Jasper would be as good as Fairmont Lake Louise or Banff. To be fair, FJPL is miles above anything else in the Jasper area and this review should be read with this in mind.

Yes, the rooms will have the amenities and trim expected and the staff are perfectly Fairmont. In fact, Trevor at the front desk was superlative, and Matthew at the Health Center did his utmost.

Where the property falls (vis-a-vis) its chain brethren is in maintenance. The grounds were terribly icy and although an email notice had been sent to staff notifying them of the dangers, no such warning was given to the patrons that we knew of, and little effort was seen to salt or remove the ice in the half-capacity hotel.

Further, the door handle / lock to our cabin were broken requiring a lengthy visit from the locksmith during which time we were unable to leave our room. This small detail was revealing of the type of refit required across the property when we learned that this was a growing problem. Next, the pull-out couch mattresses are likely the originals from when the rooms were built as they were found to be concave and wafer thin. Lastly, although the main lodge bears the air of a true mountain lodge, the bulk of the rooms are shabby looking and noisy. We found that those with a second floor (newer build) were extremely loud and poorly insulated: in sum, slapdash construction.

We adore the chain but will not return to this property. Fairmont can do better than this.

Room Tip: Get a lake view and stay in a single-floor cabin. Draw straws for who must sleep on the pull-out...

Hello, localtravelore - thank you for your review of The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. Our colleagues take great pride in offering the best of service and I will pass on your kind comments. I also appreciate your comments in regards to your room and to the condition of the grounds. This winter has been unseasonably warm in the day and very cold at night, resulting in slippery conditions throughout Jasper and the surrounding area. Of course this is not an excuse for icy walkways and for that I apologize - our Grounds department has been working diligently to keep our guest areas safe and will continue to do so over the winter months. We hope we can one day welcome you back for a visit. Sincerely, The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge

What a wonderful experience. From the personalised service to the amazing Outlook cabin we stayed in our little group was treated like royalty. We literally stayed where the Queen and Prince Philip stayed when they were last there. The staff were amazing and the scenery was spectacular. It was magical. Thank you Fairmont and Rocky Mountaineer.

Sounds like you enjoyed your stay in Outlook Cabin, our "Royal Retreat". You are correct - it is the same cabin that Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip stayed in in 2005, as well as King George V1 and Queen Elizabeth back in 1939. Thank you for the reviewTiffanyGoldCoast! Sincerely, The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge

My wife and I spent three nights at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge at the end of November. We arrived quite late on a very cold evening and were met in our car outside the main reception by a very nice fellow who immediately provided our room keys and a map to our room. He even offered to accompany us to our room to help with the bags. I think this level of service may only be available to members of the Fairmont President's Club. However, it's free to join, so it would definitely be worth checking that out on the Fairmont website before you book. President's Club members also have access to a limited amount of preferential parking, which may save you walking a couple of hundred yards. Although if you're staying here, chances are you're here for the walking anyway so that's probably neither here nor there.

We stayed in a Junior Lakeview Suite, which was comfortable and spacious and appointed to the sort of standard you'd expect of a hotel of this grade.

I think the main reason for staying in this hotel if you're in Jasper though would be the fabulous location. There are lots of trails that are directly accessible from the hotel and even Jasper itself is only around an hour's walk away. Just far enough to work up an appetite for lunch and then walk it off again on the way back.

There was a good selection of places to eat and the hotel's staff were consistently friendly and helpful. The only real downside to the experience is that, since it's a Fairmont, unless you can bag a good offer it's likely to be pretty expensive. However, overall we had a really good time and would happily stay there again or recommend it to others.

Room Tip: It shouldn't matter what your room is like because you should only be sleeping in it. Get out and see as much of the amazing scenery as you can.

I stayed in a cabin at this hotel in May 2011 when visiting my sister who lives in Calgary.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this hotel. The location is wonderful, it is close to downtown Jasper yet far enough outside of town that you feel you are truly in the wilderness. The lobby is beautiful and the grounds are amazing. The view on the lake with the mountains is really what sells this hotel.
It is pricey to stay here, but I would not expect anything else from a hotel of this quality and in such a location. We rented a canoe and went out on the lake - beautiful and worth the money. We ate at the upscale restaurant on site - I will say, the bill was a little much, but - it was absolutely wonderful food. I do think for the money, the service could have been slightly more attentive but its nothing worthy of complaints.

The heated pool is a great touch so you can swim under the mountains any time of day/season/year. I had a pedicure at the spa - I *highly* recommend the spa here. The prices are fair, and prior to your appointment, you have access to the pool, sauna, steam room, etc. You get a robe and slippers and have a lounge room that looks out to the mountains with complimentary drinks and small snacks (muffins, etc).

I believe for only something like $20/day you can access everything at the hotel (canoes, restaurants, spa, etc) without actually having to have a room booked or stay at the hotel. This could be a great option for people staying at a lower priced hotel in Jasper to still be able to experience the atmosphere here.

Overall, the hotel is wonderful. The location sells this place, despite it being on the very pricey side of hotels. I would definitely recommend it if you have the money to spare.
