While looking for motels in Maine, we came across Ship Ahoy. It had everything we wanted, cheap, great view and a swimming pool. We decided this was the motel we wanted to stay at for a week. When we were checking in the lady was real helpful and very nice. After we got our key we walked to our room we spent about 10 minutes trying to get into the room. Finally we got the door open. Walking into the room, we thought it was ok. We sat down and looked around. The one window in front didnt shut at the top, there was about an inch gap where the window was suppose be attached to the frame. The door, well we found out what the problem was. The door wasnt even put on straight. The left hand side had a gap ranging from 1 to 2 inches. Dead bugs in the corner. Being 2 females alone in Maine, we decided that this motel was not for safe for us. We went to the front desk and told the lady that helped us before, that we weren't happy with the room. Her attitude changed after we told her all the problems and that we didnt feel safe. After a long conversation with her, we ended up getting a refund and finding a very nice motel along the bay.

Ship Ahoy or Man Overboard. This place should be your last choice even after you thought of sleeping in your car. Even If I was younger and I was going to take my girlfriend for a nice weekend, I would be concerned what she or me for that matter might get something sleeping here. Read all the other reviews and you will figure out just what not to do. and a few who said this place was great (for the money) years ago are right, it was, but I believe the owners are just looking at the property as a whole for selling to a developer who might bulldoze the whole place and build a really nice place. stay tune, maybe in a few years someone will take it over or build something new. its a shame as it has a great veiw of Boothbay Harbor from a different location.

Besides the large red stain on the bedpad and very hard coil mattresses(great for me but not my wife) and the paper thin walls, the Ship Ahoy is the best deal going, except for the local campground. Room was clean, sunny, and the most basic motel room you will ever find. No internet, no phone,no cable, no coffee, not even a motel guide in the top drawer. But fresh towels and sheets every day, lots of cups, free ice, nice clean pool(though small and shallow) a great view of the harbor and a very helpful staff. The coffee shop sits in a separate building on a hill over the water with a spectacular view. There are two other buildings in the complex, smaller and closer to the water, which may have fewer problems but they cost a bit more. We stayed in the larger building near the road. We spent $105 for two nights. You probably will spend more than that for ONE night in any other motel in the area. So if a little sex in the next room at 1am doesn't bother you, or an inebriated couple arriving at 2am on the other side can be tolerated this may be the place for you. We'd go again but I think we might look into one of the other buildings.

My husband and I with our daughter and son in law spent 4 wonderful days at the Ship Ahoy Motel in beautiful Boothbay Harbor the first week in August. The rooms in the Far East were not luxurious but they were certainly clean and neat with fresh linens and comfortable beds. The bathrooms were very clean with plenty of hot water and towels. The view from the private balconies was to die for!! Although the coffee shop only served coffee and pastries, it was a great way to wake up in the morning with coffee enjoying the beautiful view of the bay. I would definitely go back.

Friends have stayed every summer, for years, at Ship Ahoy. We decided to give it a try. The location could not be more beautiful, a million dollar view for very little money. The decor was 1960, paneling and harvest gold. Beds were very comfy, linens fresh and crisp. Chambermaid did a great job and was very helpful offering to help with our bags. The buildings are not 'soundproofed' and for some this might be a problem. The other guests are friendly and many are repeat guests.
If you want all the ammenities and services then pay for them at a place that charges $150 and up per night. You will have central air (versus a wall unit), deluxe decor, shampoo and conditioner in a little basket, a late model tv (with a remote), a dvd player and even a phone.
If on the other hand, you spend very little time in your room, enjoy a fabulous view of Boothbay Harbor when you ARE there, enjoy your own balcony on the harbor, have your own cell phone, enjoy Maine breezes and sounds of the harbor plus paying a very reasonable rate, this is the place for you.
We found it clean, in a good location, the staff helpful, and everything we needed in other words. I would go back.
It is all about expectations.
