Spirit Island is found in Maligne Lake. The island itself is not remarkable. Here in Ontario we have thousands of islands like this one. What makes it remarkable is its setting. It is located in the turquoise coloured Maligne Lake. The background is composed of forested mountains topped by glaciers. It is an exceptional scenic location. The tour boat company has built trails and viewing platforms on the land so that one gets the best view and the best locale for photos. I have a very good SLR with an 18 to 200 mm lens, enabling a wide range of shot framing. I also used polarizing filter to get deeper water and sky colours. As result I got several dozen photos, all of post card quality. I highly recommend the boat tour to see the island. However, I feel the guide we had was a bit sketchy. He started out the tour announcing he had dropped out of high school, which made most of his scientific and history pronouncements suspect. But I ignored the guide, and stood on the back deck of the tour boat taking scads of photos.
