“Beautiful View on top, but not our favorite in Jasper”

Sulphur Skyline Trail

We started this hike at 7:45 a.m., therefore we had lots of solitude! We never saw anyone else until we started down. Beware, this trail makes a continuous steady climb up, up, up! Made it to the top at 9:45 a.m. Spent 45 minutes on top eating our lunch (we were on TN time so it was 11:45 a.m., lunch time) and adding rocks to the cairn marker that looked kind of pitiful. Beautiful view on top, but we liked the view from the top of the Bald Hills hike much better. On the Sulphur Skyline Trail we saw some fall colors starting in the low growing vegetation and shrubs. One really low plant had turned a crimson red! We also saw several ptarmigan on this hike. It took us 1.5 hours to get back down to the trailhead. Pick up a free copy of the Jasper National Park Day Hiking Guide from the information center in Jasper. It gives specific information and maps for many of the day hikes in the area, including this one. It lists this hike as 8.6 km (5.3 miles) round trip with an elevation gain of 700 m (2297 ft.).

What more could you ask for!

Well not much more. All you have to do is turn off Highway #16 ( approximately 44 km east of Jasper) on to Fiddle Road and take a 17 km drive up a winding and scenic paved mountain road to Meitte Hot Springs, where the trail-head to Sulphur Skyline trail is located.

The hike up the Skyline trail is approximately 7 km, with approximately 700 m gained in vertical, and takes around 4 hours to accomplish. The views are spectacular. Bring water, snacks and hiking poles as the last 125 m of vertical are a hard "grunt" and the hiking poles are helpful both on the ascent more particularly on the descent.

This starts off in the car park of the Miette Hot Springs a few miles of the main road to Jasper. Park in the car park and follow the main trail past the spa. You will ascend steadily. It took us longer as we found much ice and thick snow at the summit area even in September.

The walk is moderate, but with ice and snow it can become difficult. You must have goos walking gear as you would not want to be stuck up there without some food, gear and plenty of water and maybe a flask of coffee.

The 2 hour trail is a good walk which allows more and more of the valley below (and car park) to be seen. However the final reward is the 360 degree views. These are utterly superb and allow you to see higher peaks as well as the river valley on the other main side of the peak.

This trail is a bout an hour drive from the town of Jasper, but we saw bighorn sheep along the way, right off the road. Very scenic drvie, as well! .... We did this hike to get superior views and it delivered. It's a fair amount of elevation gain 2270 feet or 692 meters, but it's really enjoyable to climb - some isolated wildflowers along the way. The views at the end are just excellent! We then soaked at the Miette Hot Springs right afterward (and at just about $6 a person is a nice change of pace, after spending so much money on so many other things in the Canadian Rockies). A relaxing soak feels even better after you feel like you have earned it with a demanding hike. I posted a web album of our whole 12 day trip and the photos that match up with this Sulphur Skyline hike and surrounding area are #178-189. Go to picasaweb.google.com/mjneenan, if you would like to view the photos ... and please let me know if you have any questions.

The hike is awesome; it will get your heart rate up before meeting the summit. Beautiful scenery, make sure you have the correct hiking foot wear, at the top you will be hiking on rocks.
