Sunwapta Falls Rocky Mountain Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 25, 2014

This resort is right on the road about halfway between the town of Jasper and the town of Lake Louise ... really not much else except campgrounds along this stretch. The lodge is not bad, but is showing the years and could use updating. The biggest highlight is its proximity to the gorgeous Sunwapta Falls (hike to both upper and lower). Restaurant (reached through a large gift shop full of the usual made-in-China tourist junk) has a nice menu and good food, but for some reason they thought it was a good idea to pipe in bad 1980s pop music morning and evening. A little attention to details both inside and out would kick this place up a notch with very little effort.

Room Tip: A room away from the road and the entry parking lot will spare you the steady stream of tour buses a...

Hi EcoArtTraveller!

Thanks so much for choosing us and for your valuable comments and feedback. I would like to elaborate a little more for readers interested in the exceptional opportunity to stay along the Icefields Parkway.

Hwy 93, the Icefields Parkway:
This exceptionally beautiful, picturesque, scenic, mind blowing, heart expanding drive traverses the distance between the town of Jasper and the town of Lake Louise. Roughly 220km.

Along the way, you will find facilities every 50km or so. Headed south from the town of Jasper, we are the first one on the west side. We have accommodations of course, but also provide services for travellers on the Parkway during the day.

50km further south you'll find the incredible Columbia Icefields on the west side and the interpretive centre and Glacier View Inn on the east. Here you will have the opportunity to join Brewster for a SnoCoach ride on the Glacier, or to take part in their new attraction the SkyWalk. We provide tickets for both at Sunwapta. The Icefields is basically the boundary between Jasper and Banff National Parks.

50km south of the Glacier View Inn, you'll find the Saskatchewan River Crossing Resort. Scenic doesn't even begin to describe the mountain vistas you'll find there. Hikes abound. They also provide food and beverage and shopping for day travellers.

50km south of the Crossing you'll find the spectacular historic Num Ti Jah lodge sitting right on the precipice of Bow Lake with views of the Glacier across the way. Wow what a spot. They have limited room availability, and one of the most charming buildings in the Rockies. I'm a big fan of the location.

Shortly there after you'll find yourself in Lake Louise!

I should say, this is a list of facilities... as for stops, trails, sights to be seen, there can be no definitive list. I would say the Parkway is the most unsung hero of any Rockies vacation. Too many have come only to enjoy the towns... the Parkway is where those transcendent moments occur where you feel both inconsequential and elevated in the same moment.

We're lucky to be close to one of the great places on the Parkway: the Sunwapta Falls. Aside from their power, beauty and might, there's a rich untold human history with the Falls that we've just begun to learn of this year.

Stay tuned on our social media channels as we hope to have more info put together by the end of the season for those interested in history and culture! Find us at SunwaptaFalls on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Youtube.

Gift Shop:
Yes we have items made in China! Yes we have some 'tourist junk' (some might call it gifts for people back home, something inexpensive to remind them of the experience and area).

However, our gift store proudly carries a great deal of regional and nationally authentic items. Local artisans, soap companies, jewelry, moccasins, buffalo leather accessories, books, Canadian hunting and fishing knives, ammolite, sculptures, wildlife and landscape photography... and some native art. Our main calendar and post card supplier even prints in Canada and is a local company out of Edmonton! If you follow us on Instagram or Facebook you can catch some images of items we've posted there.

Restaurant:
The food and menu pricing can be found online on the restaurant page of our website. I highly recommend you make advance reservations for this 13 table intimate dining room! Call or email our front desk: 1-888-828-5777 or info@sunwapta.com.

As for the 80's music, I had to smile at that comment :) Isn't it just a sweet affair we all have with 80's music? Everyone wants to rule the world, but I will drop a careless whisper in the manager's ear to bring it to his attention:) Sorry, couldn't help myself!

Updating:
Thank you for your comments regarding overall appearance and also recommendations. I've proposed plans for approval that I think will give the exterior and interior a good notch up as you suggest. I hope to be able to speak to those once they are finished!

Thanks again EcoArtTraveller!

Though the lodge is on the highway the surroundings afford a much more park ambiance than places in Banff, Jasper or Lake Louise. My front door opened on a veranda and then wild forest beyond. The accommodation wasn't very lodge like but comfortable. The staff was great. Great walks and trails just close by.

This is a fantastic base for exploring the Rockies, the staff were brilliant, food very good and the accomodation was clean and spacious. Some even have a fireplace which is realy cosy to sit round on chilly nights.
You will have to have your own transport as it is 30 miles out of the town of Jasper but ideal for exploring in all directions.
Of the 8 different places we stayed whilst touring Canada this was by far the friendliest, highly recommended.

Room Tip: If you want a fireplace ask for the 1 queen bed rooms, not the 2 queen beds.

We were just passing through for one night on the way from Banff to Clearwater and this was perfect for that purpose. The staff at the desk were very polite, friendly and efficient. Nice location, easy to find and a short walk to see the falls. It's a good 40 minute drive into Jasper, though. Facilities were clean and everything in good condition. We didn't use the restaurant, so can't comment on the food.

My wife and I booked this hotel for our roundtrip from Vancouver around BC and the National Park. We sat outside on the front porch in the evening and it was amazing. Very clean cabin and spacious too.

Hi Ulrich!

Thanks so much for staying with us, and for taking the time to leave your comments on TripAdvisor! Very happy to see that what we offer matches your idea of what a National Park Experience should be :)

For the reader, let me fill in a few details!

FRONT PORCH WITH VIEW!
Not all of our rooms have porches. Not all views are the same. We have bungalows with 4 hotel rooms in each, and each room is totally self contained with its own entrance. Two of these rooms have 2 Doubles and a Sundeck (Our Rocky Mountain Double), 2 have a queen bed and fireplace (Our Hideaway). For more on room amenities, visit the accommodations page of our site.

Of the Hideaway rooms, 9 of them have a porch, and 6 of those have views of mountains. Generally we don't book rooms by views as we have to juggle rooms around quite a bit to get everyone in! That said, the only chance you have to book a room with a queen bed and porch with a view is to contact us directly: 1-888-828-5777 or info@sunwapta.com. We will do our best to accommodate specific requests!

In all honesty, when it comes to views you really do not need to fret! The nice thing about Sunwapta is that we are located right in the middle of a gorgeous forested mountainous landscape. Peaks surround us, and the falls are a short stroll away. If you are looking to unplug and really experience staying in the middle of Canadian wilderness while having exceptional service and food with a comfortable room, then we're an excellent choice!

ROOM SIZE:
All of our rooms are single room hotel rooms. Our Hideaway rooms are about 215 square feet; The Rocky Mountain Double comes in around 250 square feet and our Lodge rooms (also with 2 doubles and a deck) come in at 210 square feet.

We have lots of candid pictures of our main room types on our Facebook page in an album called 'candid pictures', most of which I've loaded on TripAdvisor as well.

No matter how you book your room with us, always feel free to contact us first to get all the details you might want before booking! 1-888-828-5777 / info@sunwapta.com. Be sure to book your dining reservations in advance this way too! It's super busy in the summer.

Thanks again Ulrich we hope to see you again!

Reception staff very welcoming and helpful. They obtained a good value coach rate to Calgary for us including pickup from Sunwapta at the end of our stay :)
Room was cosy and would have loved to try out the room fireplace but weather was too warm.
Resort was within easy walking distance to beautiful falls complex with various pleasant walks.
Meal quality and service at the restaurant was great! Extensive gift shop.

Room Tip: Ask for the fireplace to be lit when it is cold.

Hi Wayne!

It's a long way from Australia to Jasper - thanks so much for staying with us and we all hope that your time in Jasper will leave you with stories, pictures and memories to share for a lifetime!

I'll comment for TripAdvisor readers. Readers, I tend to be a little long in the words, but you can skim the headings to get to the points you care most about.

STAFF ARE HELPFUL!
At Sunwapta we hire for attitude. That means we hire people that like people, that want to help, and that want to help make the experience in Jasper a memorable one. We have lots of ideas and recommendations to share for sightseeing and we also act as ticketing agents for all the top attractions in Jasper National Park.

My brief recommendation: if you are coming to Jasper, no matter where you stay, make sure you are spending a minimum of 2 nights. There's lots to do and see, and the biggest regret we hear from guests: not enough time! Don't make that mistake!

If you are looking for some help in your planning stages, give us a call or drop us an email. We'd be happy to share some ideas with you right away! To get you started, we can email PDF versions of our 3 self-drive itineraries which we use as the basis of our recommendations. These are 3 separate brochures, each one representing a full day of sightseeing and activities. Reach out: 1-888-828-5777 / info@sunwapta.com.

TRANSPORTATION:
Some people stay with us even if they don't have a vehicle (car, bus, bicycle, motorcycle). I highly recommend that you have a vehicle. It's a 53km stretch of glorious sightseeing between downtown Jasper and Sunwapta. A vehicle will give you the freedom to explore. If you do not have a form of transportation arranged, I recommend staying in the town of Jasper instead.

That said! We do have some guests who know our location, and are happy to be dropped here vehicle free. We had a gentleman from Germany last year who stayed 7 days, going on long walks and gentle hikes each day with a note book and sketch pad! We are a scheduled stop for most Brewster busses, so it is possible to be dropped here and picked up here.

Brewster owns several of the attractions in the Canadian Rockies and operates transportation services from YYC to Banff to Lk Louise and all the way up to Jasper. It's a nice way to travel too, leaving your eyes to wonder the landscape and hands to take pictures. The drivers are very knowledgeable too. We're happy to help arrange pick up and drop off for you if we can.

FIREPLACE:
Our Hideaway room is the room type with the fireplace. It's a stone wood-burning fireplace and we offer wood and fire lighting service free of charge. Most nights cool down enough to allow for it... but some times it is indeed warm, especially mid July to mid August.

LOCAL WALKS / HIKES
There are several! We have a little in-house hiking guide to local walks and hikes. Drop us an email and we can send that to you in PDF format as well: info@sunwapta.com.

MEALS!
The Restaurant at Sunwapta is a recent recipient of the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence! In the evening our restaurant caters exclusively to in-house guests. It's an intimate setting with 13 tables in our main dining room, table cloths, a crackling fire and views of the Endless Chain Ridge. Be sure to make your reservations in advance through the front desk! First seating is at 630pm, with seatings every half hour.

Give us a call or email to book: 1-888-828-5777 or info@sunwapta.com. No need for reservations for breakfast or lunch.

Thanks again Wayne M! Again we hope you had a wonderful time in Canada!
