This is an easy hike to the pass summit. The entire trail is 7 kilometers one way. We walked to the summit and then back down to the campground.
This easy hike provides you with an excellent view of the Athabasca Glacier and the columbia icefields.
It is well worth the trip if you are staying in the valley.

Hiking in the mountains is my favorite thing in the whole wide world. How do you rate something like that? Needless to say, I would not have chosen to spend that day doing anything else (except perhaps another hike!). Highly recommend this one. It is beautiful.

There were many people In the rockies you always have to be bear aware even on well visited trails and we always carried bear spray (don't believe that bear bells are effective but I'm not an expert) but my family wanted to hike on trails that would have at least some traffic so bears hopefully would keep away.

Anyway, the trail rises above tree level very quickly. There was a lot of climbing but definitely worth it. It was quite cold and windy towards the top so take warm clothes if there are any signs of inclement weather. It was cool to see the little snow-buses (or whatever they are called!) trucking loads of people up to the Athabasca glacier (part of the Columbia icefields?). My kids were not interested in doing this (they thought it was too "touristy", I'm sure they forget that we are tourists too!)

Parking can be difficult, but once you have that taken care of, this is an excellent hike. Above tree line mountain scenery, and I have seen big horn sheep each time I've been here! Once the icefield center is out of view, this hike is amazing.

We did the full length of Wilcox Pass trail at the end of June 2012 and although it was passable much of it was still very muddy, many of the streams were fast flowing and difficult to cross and about 10% of the pass was under snow. However the views of the Athabasca Glacier are outstanding (despite the scar of the bus road) and the alpine flowers were already in view on the ascent and beginning their display on the sunnier and rockier parts of the pass. The trail car park was almost full on our return on a weekday in June so parking may be a problem on July/August weekends.

We have hiked Wilcox Pass many times in several seasons. The best time to visit is definitely in July when the wild flowers are blooming. From the top fo the pass you have a magnificent view of the Athabasca Glacier. The alpine meadows provide a superb picnic site.
