Shogun has been around the Edmonton scene for quite some time. Every visit to this restaurant has been great. This particular review is based on my last visit with colleagues. We opted to sit at the grill.
We all ordered off the Teppan menu and were not disappointed. Dishes ranged from Chicken teppan, Shrimp teppan and Steak teppan. Overall, the steak teppan was the winner. The chef was funny and the service was excellent.
In Edmonton, I only have Japanese Village as a comparison for this type of cuisine. Admittedly, I like the ambiance of Japanese Village grill a bit more as the chefs are more lively and interactive, if that is what you are looking for. Japanese Village also has more choices for steaks.
Although Shogun does serve a steak sauce and ginger sauce as part of their meals, and they are good, I have to say, I still have a softer spot for Japanese Village's steak sauce. Getting a table at Japanese Village, however, is often more difficult. Prices are a bit better at Shogun too.
Shogun, is still a consistent choice. The sushi and black cod are some favourites at this restaurant. If you are looking for a "less hype" dinner with good food and good service, then Shogun is an excellent choice.
