Nice new restaurant in downtown Edmonton. It is very busy with a lot of people trying out the new place, so reservations recommended. Without a reservation, you may still be able to get a place in the bar. It is divided into two halves: the modern restaurant side, and the bar side which is a wonderful re-creation of the old Alberta Hotel bar from early 1900's.
The dinner menu gives you the option of ordering small plates, like tapas, or regular dinner size plates. We had 2 couples, so we ordered 4 small dishes for each couple; it was just right.
The much touted KFC Korean Fried Cauliflower was a bit of a letdown; it was good but not worth a WOW. The mozzarella stuffed meat balls, crispy pork belly, gem salad, cornbread with bacon, and grilled prawns were all very good.
The blue crab cakes were just OK. The cakes were a bit mushy, not very crab tasting. The accompanying Chipotle Aioli could use a bit more zip.
The Spinalis Rib Eye Rolls were very good, tender and juicy. The accompanying Horseradish Crème Fraiche did not taste of horseradish at all.
Prices for the small plates average about $15, the large plates $25. Salads and sides very reasonable prices.
We definitely will be going back, there are more things to try on their menu.

Sat on the restaurant side. Our waiter Nick was great. Enthusiastic, good suggestions on food and wine. Great cocktails and wine. Mozza platter was tasty and novel. Plenty for 4 people. Kfc cauliflower delicious. Crab cakes ok but not as full flavour as hardware. Good place to share tapas.

We had a great meal here: KFC Cauliflower (yummy), Crab cakes (so so), Tortilla Soup (really really good), Flatiron steak and eggs (great) and the Pig Nic (pork three ways - also yummy). Jack Daniels chocolate cake (portion too big but good). The food was interesting, price point was good (about 25% less than the Hardware Grill its mother restaurant). The menu is interesting - good choices for small plates, fresh mozzarella bar and nice salads. Very few traditional entrees. Heads up there is a $1/head cover charge for water - still or sparkling.

The dining room was mixed old and new though the floor lamp beside us was irritating as it cast a big shadow and heat. Service needs work - too casual, slow and awkward. Still a new place so I am sure they will work that out.

We will be back. The lunch menu looks great. Came back a few days later to the lounge. Nice atmosphere, good selection of beers. Provided with complimentary smoked devilled eggs (really good. Nice choice for after work or pre-show.

Ever since hearing about the new Tavern 1903, I've been dying to try it out. I booked a lunch reservation with a group of girlfriends and we were very impressed. The decor is a wonderful mix of modern and old. We were greeted promptly and seated. Our waiter took the time to tell us about the history of the restaurant and even gave us a tour, pointing out the features from the original Alberta Hotel. We ordered the mozzarella bar sharing plate to start and everyone loved it. Our waiter brought us extra crostini's when we ran out. The menu says that this is to share with 2 people but we were 5 and there was plenty of cheese to go around. The menu features a number of transplants from the Hardware Grill as well as a number of new options. I chose to order the white truffle Mac 'n cheese with lobster and loved it. Like Hardware Grill, Tavern 1903 doesn't skimp on the portions. There were many items on the menu that I wanted to try and can't wait to go back to try them.

We just visited the recently opened Tavern 1903. The food selection was very good - offering a very trendy and unique menu. The steak and egg was our favourite dish - the flat iron steak was delicious. The trio of pork - Pig- Nic was good as well but not very filling for those with a big appetite. We had the KFC which is a version of Korean Fried Cauliflower. It was also amazing. Very unique and definitely worth the experience even if only once. We also had a trio of Mozzarella and it was a great sharing plate - we had five of us and really enjoyed it. The service was really good. Now for the bad part and why we would not return. The restaurant is extremely noisy. As noisy as VIVO in Edmonton. At peak times worse. The seating also was strange. If you had seven we were told you needed to book two tables side by side. When the restaurant is full (which it usually is) you start to get anxiety - people trying to get around poor configured tables and the noise so loud you really couldn't enjoy the great food. Great place however for late night dinner goers...Edmonton certainly has a shortage of those.
