“very nice hotel with convenient location”
Reviewed January 29, 2008

Tagged along with my husband on his business trip. This hotel was great for both of us. Close to downtown with easy in and out with the car. We had a fabulous view of the Saskatchewan River from our room and the leaves were red and gold and the sun rise every morning was incredible. The breakfast was very good and the staff was more than helpful.

We stayed at this hotel for 9 nights whilst we were visting Edmonton to watch Ice Hockey.

First impressions of this hotel were not great from the outside but the interior (Lobby, Bar Area etc) was superbly presented and welcoming.

We had a suite room on the top floor which had lots of space including a living area, seperate bedroom and bathroom.
The view from the room was very nice as we looked out towards the east down the river valley. The only gripe we had with the room was that there was no kettle to boil water so we had to buy our own. The furniture in the room was fairly modern and the bed was extremely comfortable.

The services in the hotel were good with a laundry room (very important for a long term stay) and fitness centre. The bar area and restaurant were also very nice with friendly staff who looked after us very well during our stay.

I would say this hotel is first and foremost for business travellers but we certainly enjoyed our time here and in Edmonton!

I don't consider myself hard to please. But I expect a few basic things, like a clean floor. The cookie behind the curtain i can understand but how housekeeping could miss a set of false teeth in the middle of the floor is beyond me. The ceiling grate that fell down when i was out of the room didn't impress me either. They keep a list of places in the neighbourhood where you can eat at the front desk, which pretty much sums up the food the hotel offers.

We stayed for 3 nights in a lovely room with a king size bed. It was a nice quiet corner room so we had a view over the river valley and the gardens at the Fairmont hotel next door. The room was spotless and I liked the fact that the bed was made up with white linens -the duvet cover as just an accent folded over at the end of the bed. I don't like hotel with bedspreads because you know they are not washed frequently enough. Check in was very quick and they had these nice little cookies at the front desk. I stopped back every night at 5 pm for more cookies!

We would stay at The Marriot again as it was good value and the location was great. We also discovered 2 excellent restaurants on a list the front desk supplied to us and we would highly recommend both. Sorrentino's Italian Bistro Bar and Madison's Grill. Dinner for 2 was about $100 at each place, but the food, service and ambiance was fabulous at both restaurants!

Room was fine (though the building seems to have a constant hum/vibration).

They only offer valet parking. Parking attendant never seems to be around or busy. Returning late at night, security guard clueless about where we should leave the car for the attendant and when busy, the attendant and the guard gave conflicting instructions.

I sent an email to general mgr with some constructive criticism but he did not have the courtesy to respond.

If you plan not to use your car during your stay, it's fine but if you want to go in/out with your vehicle, be prepared for long waits.

We stayed at the Courtyard for two nights. There was a small mix-up with our reservation - we had been confirmed a king-size bed, but the room we were assigned had two queen beds. The front desk staff said they would look into it and get back to us, but they never did. However, the room we had was very nice, as it was at the end of the building, and we had two windows facing north (the street) and four facing east (great river valley view!) The room decor was very nice, however one thing missing was a table near the easy chair - there was no place to put anything down other than the floor, which resulted in a spilled glass of wine!

The bathroom was probably the cleanest I have ever seen in a hotel - totally spotless! However, for the price, I was expecting more in the way of amenities - there were three small bottles of shampoo, conditioner and lotion. I have stayed places a lot cheaper and had more.... shower gel, make-up removed wipes, shoe wipes, shower cap, mouthwash etc. Bath robes would have been nice too.

The bed was really comfy and the linens were very nice quality. The bathroom towels were also nice and plush.

If you want a hotel right downtown, this would be a great location. We booked here because my husband had meetings here, but we don't normally stay downtown. We were a little taken aback at the number of street people and panhandlers - you could not leave the hotel without being asked repeatedly for change, and there were people sleeping under the shelter of the building next door (we could see them from our room). Living in a small town, we're just not used to it... I suppose if you spend a lot of time in cities, you get used to it.

All in all though, it was a comfortable stay and I would recommend the Courtyard by Marriott (but where is the courtyard??)

My husband and I were in Edmonton, Canada, for a wedding in November, and chose the Marriott for it's convenient, downtown location. The fabulous view of the river valley was a bonus! We had the good fortune of having great weather the weekend we were there, and could see for miles.

We didn't have dinner at the hotel, but enjoyed the breakfast buffet which was included in our room rate. The staff was very friendly and greeted us warmly, even remembering us on the second day. We also visited the lounge for appetizers one afternoon, and loved our table for two in the window and the panoramic view.

The Marriott is right next door to the historic (and more expensive) MacDonald Hotel, and we highly recommend stopping in at the lounge for a nightcap. In contrast to the Marriott's modern style, the MacDonald has wonderful old world charm. And there is a charming outdoor patio overlooking the river valley that would be a fabulous treat in the summer months.

If you go to Edmonton, we highly recommend you stay downtown. Edmonton is very spread out, and any other location would definately require a car. We didn't have time for sight seeing, but we did check out the West Edmonton Mall which was extremely large and loud. There are a vast number of shops catering to the younger set, which explains the many roving groups of teenagers we saw on the Friday night that we were there. Younger children would probably love the excitement of the onsite attractions such as the wave pool and skating rink. For us middle-aged adults, the mall was way too big and noisy. Sensory overload!

If you are planning a trip to Edmonton, the Marriot is a great value and highly recommended. Due to the northern location, though, a summer visit would be best for taking in some of the fabulous sights that Alberta has to offer such as the magnificent Jasper National Park.
