Owner description: Whyte Avenue (also known as 82 Avenue) is an arterial road in south-central Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It became the main street of the City of Strathcona as it formed, and now runs through Old Strathcona. It was named in 1891 after Sir William Whyte, who was superintendent of the CPR's western division from 1886 to 1897 and was knighted by King George V in 1911. Old Strathcona is Edmonton's main arts and entertainment district, and is also a shopping hub for local residents and students at the nearby University of Alberta. Whyte Avenue, now a heritage area, is at the heart of this district, housing many shops, cafes, restaurants and bars.

“Night life yes, but much else?”
Reviewed October 27, 2012

I imagine it is nice place to visit in the summer, or when the Oilers win or maybe all decked out at Christmas? But I've not been around for any of those happenings. I've been to Whyte Ave several times and every time I go I find it a little underwhelming. There are a few trendy stores and quirky stores and a few cafes, but the Avenue is very short. There are a couple of good pubs and restaurants. I think it's fair to say that every other city I have ever been to in North America has a longer strip of storefronts to meander through as a pedestrian. That's my impression, anyway.
If I was planning a trip to Edmonton and the weather wasn't supposed to be nice, the Oilers were not winning and it wasn't Christmas I would still probably go to Whyte Ave. Just to say that I'd been there. But if you've been to many other cities in North America, don't expect too much.

“Best Nightlife in Edmonton”
Reviewed October 26, 2012

Without question, the best area for nightlife in Edmonton. The heart of Whyte Avenue is historic and magical, with plenty of shopping, restaurants, and bars. Lots of activity, life, and fun here.

“good place to shop”
Reviewed October 25, 2012

i think it's an artsy place and the facades of the building is quite interesting. I would go back for the atmosphere and walk down because it is quite pedestrian friendly.

“Great shops and unique quirkiness”
Reviewed October 24, 2012

Great to just walk and find a little something special on the Ave. Grab a berr with friends at one of the many patios. Fabulous food finds as well, my favorite being Dadeos howeer Death by Chocolate cannot be missed. Enter Divine for a great unique piece or the Plaid Giraffe for some great jewellery. My favorite place in Edmonton! Great ppl watching too :)

“Great daytime location for locals or visitors”
Reviewed October 21, 2012

I've loved Whyte Avenue for decades and with all the varied places for meeting up for coffee, tea, or meals it offer a potpourri of choices. Shopping is eclectic and will have something for everyone.

Visit in the daytime rather than at night, however. In recent years, due to the over abundance of bars on Whyte, it gets a bit rowdy at night. But it's a fun place to spend hours in the daytime.
