“What a wonderful, relaxing stay!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 19, 2009

My husband and I decided to get away staying three nights at the Varscona Hotel on Whyte. We were so pleased with our visit. The second we arrived the staff was very welcoming, friendly and accommodating. They informed us of all the hotel amenities; valet parking, free wine serving, free breakfast, coffee shop, pubs, etc., as well as the events occurring that weekend.
We were much more grateful when we entered our room. It was beautiful with a speical touch of class. It was very clean and offered everything we needed. The room was kept clean all weekend and anything we needed the staff was willing to take the time to help.
The management really knows how to create a warm and relaxing environment for their guests. Our visit was definitely a pleasurable experience. A home away from home!
No doubt, we will be returning! Thanks again....Oh, and great room service :)

As first-time visitors to Edmonton & the Fringe Festival, we found the Varscona Hotel to be a fine place to stay. We spent four nights there, went off on other adventures for a few days, then returned to the Varscona for another three nights. We found the staff to be consistently friendly & helpful. During both stays, are rooms were fine -- quiet, nicely decorated, clean, & spacious. We were regular users of the small-but-generally-uncrowded exercise room. The provided breakfast offerings were simple, but included a enough variety to keep us from roaming in search of alternatives. We thoroughly enjoyed our Fringe experience & found the Varscona Hotel to be a very comfortable and pleasant home base while doing so.

The Varscona has been my previous choice of hotel for Edmonton, great location off Whyte and superb staff. A hotel which I have had no hesitation to recommend to many people coming to Edmonton for the first time.
How sad that on my latest trip I found the staff surly and abrupt from the moment my wife and I checked in. No help with luggage and the complete absense of any mention of parking facilities.
Numerous actual problems as well including: In the room itself no hot water was available and would not drain from the tub.
The outside was unkempt and covered in fast food boxes and wrappers and clearly no-one had bothered to remove the garbage from the previous Friday night.
Any complaints were met with a "Nothing we can do attitude, you need to speak to the manager" Perhaps that would have been easier if the manager was ever around?
Again on leaving we invited the manager to address these and other concerns and of course have heard nothing.
While I appreciate that nothing can run smoothly all the time, it is how you overcome difficulties to let customers know they are thought about and looked after.

We stayed for one night; the staff was great; the room was clean and very quiet; not special but very good for a night stay.
We would stay again.

My wife and I stayed at this hotel on Sept 26 - 27, 2009 and we were very impressed with what we got. The rooms were clean and relatively modern for such an older part of Edmonton. They have a nightly cheese and wine tasting for guests everyday except Sunday. Not a top of the line cheese and wine tasting but was a very enjoyable experience non-the-less. The Continental Breakfast had a good variety of items to choose from but get there early as it gets quite crowded in the small room and it closes at 9:30 am. Being in the entertainment district we thought it would be noisy but it was not.

The location of the hotel is superb if you want to hang around Old Strathcona, almost dead center of the district. There are great restaurants and entertainment spots all around.

The best place on the street has to O'Byrne's Pub. It's on the same block of the hotel (west) so an easy 'stumble' back to the room. The food was some of the best Irish Food I have had and the atmosphere was almost perfect Irish. And they have live music starting arounf 4 - 5 pm.

My husband and I needed to stay close to the Edmonton University Hospital and chose this hotel for that specific reason. The friendleness and helpfulness of the staff was unbelievable. After spending a tense day at the hospital it was great to walk into a room to hear the music softly playing, bed turned down and robes layed out on the bed! What a pleasent and wonderful surprise!! It made the ending of a tense filled day much easier to handle. Wtihout a doubt we would stay there again!!! Highly recommended.

Just recently stayed here for 2 nights as my first stop on a trip across Canada, When i arrived jetlagged out of my brain! i was issued a room on the 6th floor, The room itself was nicely decorated, Decent tolietries in the bathroom, (Even things like Make up remover for women) and was spacious with a view of Whyte Ave, It was clean and the bed was comfortable. I also liked the fact they have free internet, free wine tastings, free breakfast etc (I mean how many hotels offer all those things for free these days?)

Old Strathcona appears to be one of the main neighbourhoods for good restaurants, bars etc although i must admit i never went to any of them. It has a really cool 50's style americana look to it in my opinion.

My main reason was to go to West Edmonton Mall though, The hotel were always prompt at ordering me taxis but just be aware trying to get a taxi at the end of the day from West Edmonton mall is like trying to get blood out of a stone! I ended up catching one from the lobby of Fantasyland Hotel and would recommend people try that, because there are literally no taxi/cab ranks in any part of the mall! And FYI a fare is around $25 to and from the hotel,

I'd stay here again if i'm ever back in Edmonton.

If i'm ever back in Edmonton
