Stayed here for a conference at the University of Alberta.
Rooms are standard, well furnished and clean.
The staff was welcoming and helpful.
Good location on Whyte avenue, walking distance to University of Alberta (20 minutes) in nice weather, but the last day when I had my luggage, the desk offered complementary shuttle, which was fast and pleasant. I expect in the winter it would be welcome too.
There is a Second Cup coffee shop in the lobby (closes around 10) and the complementary continental breakfast in the 2nd floor dining room had excellent coffee, a good choice of breads, bagels etc, fruit, yogurt etc. HOwever, if you arrive late, there is no room service, but there are restaurants nearby.
I would stay again

The staff and hotel is very nice but the Metterra and the Matrix just seem to be a bit nicer for the same price. When staying in edmonton this is my #3 hotel to call for availability.

Stayed here for a few nights and it was a great location for walking to restaurants, the river, and the university. Lively area along Whyte Avenue with lots of interesting shops and choices for food.
Very good service in the hotel and excellent lounge area to make tea, coffee and grab a piece of fruit. Good continenetal breakfast included in rate.
Hotel elevators and hallways need some refurbishing.

The hotel is old...but has had serious renovation. The rooms are small but well appointed, soap and bath products top notch. The location would be ideal if you are in Edmonton for a festival or concert.

This hotel has positive reviews that I don't understand. The hotel has not been updated in years. The bed covering in the rooms is one of those nasty multi-colored shiney coverlets. The bed linens are fine in spite of the covering. The TV is not a flat screen. The bathrooms are small. The closets are smaller and require some juggling to move clothes in and out. The room furniture is old and shows all the wear & tear.
The room I had was toward the rear of the hotel, with no shared door between the rooms so it was quiet. The staff is friendly and helpful but that and wine & cheese does not make up for an a very outdated hotel room.
The best part of the hotel is the "2nd Cup" Coffee located off the lobby and the hotel location on Whyte. Whyte Street is very walkable with numerous samll resturants, shops and bars. The street can get loud when the bars close--and although my stay included a Friday night I did not hear any late night partying.

Room Tip: Ask for quiet room away from Whyte Strret

I've stayed here frequently because of its location. Close to University Hospital as we as the Jubilee Auditorium. Situated in the heart of Old Strathcona which I prefer over downtown Edmonton.

Recently stayed again and thought it was time I submitted a revie aftern noticing how shabby the hotel is becoming. Same nasty duvet covers they've used for years. Time to switch to washable, bright white and fresh new ones. And ditch the nasty Velux blankets. Furniture is worn and dated. TV outdated....no flat screens. The place needs a new colour scheme and a fresh coat of paint. Cannot control air temp; room was too hot for comfortable sleep. It's this way every Spring. Remember to leave window open when you go out so room cools off a little.

Bed is comfortable, room is reasonably clean, though shower floor in the spa-themed room felt a bit slimey.

Connected parkade is very convenient.

Front desk and housekeeping staff friendly.

Have eaten in and ordered room service from Murrieta's: nice menu, food is always good.

I like having the Second Cup in the bldg, wish they stayed open later.

Bottom line if it wasn't in this location I wouldn't stay there. My preference is to stay at the newer, fresher, more stylish Metterra a few blocks away; I stay at the Varscona when I can't get a room there.

BTW, the Varscona has a hospital rate which can be substantially less than their posted rate, so if you're in Edmonton for medical appts, outpatient surgery, etc. ask about it.

The Varscona Hotel was a great overnight stay while we were in Edmonton. The Hotel's decor has been updated and our room was clean and comfortable. Free parking was convenient, the comp. breakfast was average and the staff was helpful and courteous. The hotel is right in the middle of the action on Whyte Ave., and lots of great restaurants are in the neighborhood. Despite being on a busy street, we did not find it noisy. Would def. recommend a stay there.
