“Great stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 15, 2013 via mobile

Had a great stay at Hotel Macdonald! the hotel is beautiful and the views are amazing. We had some good food there as well. Within a few blocks of City Hall, office towers and shops. I would definitely stay there again.

There are no 5* hotels in Edmonton, the only one that supposedly comes close is the Fairmont. Checked it out on NYE to test it out, as most other hotels in Edmonton are quite embarrassing.

The hotel is extremely average. Rooms are very dated, amenities are not at all luxurious and service is cold. Food is mediocre for outrageous prices. Rates are high, parking expensive.

Some pros would be the view, and the location. The hotel is also historic if you are into that, but to me it = dated.

It could be the Edmonton market, which really lacks in the hospitality sector, but I would only stay here if I needed to be downtown. It's the only real choice in Edmonton DT as the other DT properties are below average in cleanliness, which is non negotiable.

When I moved to Edmonton, I chose to stay at the Hotel Macdonald to get myself situated before taking posession of my downtown apartment. That stay did not disappoint, and so it was no question in my mind to stay there when returning to the city for a visit.

The Mac is truly a beautiful castle crowning the hills of Edmonton's beautiful river valley, and you'd never know it had closed in the 80s due to disrepair. The Fairmont standard of service will make you feel like royalty during your stay, right down to being addressed my your name when you call reception. The beds in all Fairmot hotels are unbelievably comfortable (some might say a touch too soft, but not me!).The Confederation lounge is a beautiful spot to have an after dinner drink, the views from the valley facing rooms cannot be beat, and the amenities are top notch right down to squash courts in the basement. If you're an animal lover, you might be lucky enough to see the hotel ambassador dog Smudge hanging out near the concierge desk during the day time.

While this hotel may be cost prohibitive to the everyman, if you feel like splurging (or luxury is your standard) you won't be let down by a stay here. Sign up for the President's Club program (it's free!) for a couple of perks, like rentable workout gear for 10$ per stay, and discounts and special offers occasionally.

Room Tip: Rooms on the elevator shaft get a bit of noise from that. River valley views are totally worth the e...

Ok the area of town is not the best and your car is not safe in the Parkade but once you manage to get inside it can not be beat.
I can Imagine staying in hotels like this in the early 20 th century if you had lots of money. The river valley view is stunning service is first class and its " formal" but not stuffy

Room Tip: Ask for valley view and book trip for when brunch is going

My husband surprised me with a stay at the Hotel Mac for my birthday. We had a spacious one-bedroom suite. The customer service was exceptional - we were treated like royalty for the whole weekend and they were able to accommodate us for early check in. There was even a plate of chocolates with a birthday greeting and personalized card waiting for us in the room.

It's a perfect location close to many downtown Edmonton attractions. If you bring your car, you can park it there and not need it for the rest of your trip if you stay in the downtown core. Some people think that the parking fees are steep ($25 for self-park and $35 for valet), but that's the rate I would expect to pay in downtown Edmonton.

We dined in the beautiful Harvest Room which looked over the river valley and the Muttart Conservatory.

Overall, it was a perfect way to spend a weekend!

Unbelievable split level suite, classically beautiful and some fascinating photos dotted around of various royal visits. Made the most of the room and enjoyed breakfast in there.

Views were lovely-amazing sunrise.

A colleague was in another suite which was also very nice.

Didn't get the chance to see much else of the hotel as was just passing through on a busy work schedule but i would recommend it and if you are considering a suite is say go for it!

Good sized rooms with 2 double beds and 2 armchairs. We had asked for a refrigerator in the room as husband is a diabetic. When we arrived at the hotel they were going to charge us $25 per night for the fridge but to their credit they did not once they knew the situation. One tip is to join the Pesident's Club which then gives you access to free wifi. It is conveniently located near downtown qnd if you are really keen and have no transport, the 100 express bus to West Edmonton Mall leaves from across the road.

Room Tip: We had a room at the back of the hotel which looks out over the river to the Muttard Conservatory.
