Have just arrived at the Fairmont in Edmonton to be told 25 bucks for parking, 15 bucks for the internet and a room for a family of 2 adults and 2 children is two double beds. A family room in a hotel of this standard should not mean siblings should share a bed. I asked for a put up bed so my son did not have to share with his sister but it never arrived, This is not a normal state of affairs especially when the booking says brother and sister 11 and 7 years old? Only 3 towels in the bathroom yet they said this is a family room for four people.
Hope they get better as we have booked the Fairmont hotel chain all the way across Canada from Edmonton to Vancouver.

I would check the detail with the hotel before you think about booking here.

The hotel is a beautiful hotel in a nice area of downtown near the convention centre, theatres shopping and with close access to the river valley trails.

The service was excellent for anything we needed. The rooms were spacious and very comfortable. The swimming pool was nice and large. We didn't use the fitness centre but it had a better than typical range and number of equipment.

The restaurant at on the patio had a wonderful view. The service was very slow and the food and drinks were okay at best, especially for the price being paid. Other than to sit on the patio for the overlooking view I would avoid the food here. The morning buffet on the other hand was wonderful and the service and help was great.

Hotel could not be faulted. Service fantastic and nothing is too much trouble. Health club and pool really great with all the equipment you could want. Terrace is a great place to have a drink and watch the view. Rooms have a lovely old world ambience and good facilities. Nothing to fault.

We stayed only one night at the Macdonald as a romantic getaway. We picked this hotel for its classic luxury. Certainly the location and the almost 100 year old interior are impressive. The garden and fountain, stained glass windows, and sandstone construction were impressive and well maintained. Our room was very comfortable and clean (a slightly upgraded deluxe room). The pool and exercise areas were also well maintained and relaxing. I found the staff we encountered to be friendly and efficient. My wife left a jacket in the room and the staff were able to find it and courier it back to us which was appreciated.

Only two things keep me from rating our stay as Excellent. First, the $35 per night valet parking fee seems a bit steep. You can park yourself for $25 but I have no idea where the parking is located so not sure what a deal that may be. The other event was our 25 minute wait to be seated for breakfast. You don't normally expect to need reservations for breakfast, but if you plan to eat in the Harvest room you should consider it. This eating area is surprisingly small unless you count the patio (which was not in use when we arrived). The restaurant was "full" when we arrived even though two large tables were empty. I presume those were for people with reservations, but they never showed up while we ate. The buffet was small (I have seen just as much at small mountain resorts) but I suspect they are limited by space.

Nevertheless, we enjoyed our stay and would go there again if looking for a luxury treat.

Room Tip: The hotel is only 7 stories tall so there are good odds you get a low room without much of a view...

Thank you for choosing to stay with us for your getaway. In addition, thank you for taking the time to relay your feedback to us regarding your getaway.

It was very pleasing to hear that you enjoyed your stay. With regards to our parking we do our best to remain competitive as we do not own our own parking and we do our best to retain the best possible rates for our guests. We will ensure we conduct another survey to ensure we are priced within our competitive set. As for our Breakfast Buffet this is very popular and the weekend in which you visited we had a high amount of guests join us for breakfast. We do our best to ensure our guests as seated as quickly as possible. We will review our procedures to ensure if there is a wait that this is kept to a minimum and that a refreshment is provided. In addition, we are upgrading our breakfast buffet in the near future.

We do hope to welcome you back to The Fairmont Hotel Macdonald for your next luxury treat.

Regards,

Garrett Turta

Very high ceilings, nice property. Nicely maintained even, but the front desk agents and housekeeping services leave much to be desired. Used to coming for Fairmont properties, never experienced such sub par service. Don't come to this property on a Travelzoo voucher!

I live just outside of Edmonton and we go the Macdonald Hotel a few times a year just to sit on the patio and enjoy the great view of the river valley and have always thought it would be great to stay overnight sometime. Our anniversary was on Aug 10 and so I surprised my wife with an evening at this great location. Everything was more than expected, the room looked over the river and the bed was extremley comfortable with the best pillows I have slept on in years. The service from all staff was over the top, from the waiter on the patio who took our picture for us and brought a complimentary dish with chocolates that had happy anniversary written on it in chocolate. When we went back to our room to get ready for dinner, there on the dresser was two more trays of chocolate and a personalized note from the hotel manager wishing us a happy anniversary. Shortly after, a knock on the door brought bottles of water and the gentleman even filled our ice bucket from his cart.
I highly recommend you give the Mac a try any time you have a special occasion or even if you don't, you stay will probably turn into one.
Two days later, my wife is still raving about what a great present she received and I am very glad I booked at the Macdonald.

Room Tip: The river view is the side to be on.
