n we got there, the guy at the valet parking was asking for money before my husband had the chance to say that it is included in the package that we availed of. When my husband told him that it is included in the package, the valet insisted. He ended up taking the car without getting any amount at all.

The room:
It looked like it hasn't been dusted off for a week. The sheets were clean, but the blanket on top looked like it hasn't been washed for a long time as it looked hard and rough. ( I took it off the bed later).

The romance package:
As advertised online, they said that a bottle of wine, strawberries and some chocolates were included. Unfortunately, by the term included, they meant you'd have to pay for it separately (in the case of wine and chocolates) the strawberries? They must've forgotten to remove that from their advertisement online, because we never saw a sight of it.

The view:
I added an additional few bucks, because we wanted a view of Edmonton's river valley. When we looked out, the view was a window from across the building and a part of the river valley that looks depressing. (I just though that if guests are asking for a nice view from their room and the a hotel is asking extra fee for it, I say give them the best, because they are willing to spend the extra dollars for to get it).

Ventilation:
Besides from the fact that it was dusty, it hot and it felt like the airconditioning wasn't even on.

Noise:
I was awakened at around 7:00 am because of the loud slamming doors from the hallway and some people talikng loudly. (Meaning their walls aren't that thick that you hear other people's conversation)

"Complimentary" breakfast
We had breakfast at the harvest room where they had their buffet set up. The person in charge said that it is indeed included in the romance package. So my husband and I had a quick bit and checked out as it was almost check out time and we didn't bother to stay for another night after all the inconsistencies that we experienced with their services. When we checked out, they were charging us for breakfast. Again, we mentioned that it is included in the romance package. The concierge says that only $35 is covered on our meals and that our meals were about $60 plus tax (that means the consumable $35 that's supposed to cover the "complimentary" chocolates, wine, bottled water and strawberries? was to cover the "complimentary" breakfast as well). In short, we paid a couple hundred dollars more on top of the romance package that we paid for online.

Thank you for taking the time to share the comments of your most recent stay.

It was disappointing to hear of some of the challenges that you encountered. Our Romance package does include, Roses, Strawberries and a bottle of Champagne and this should have been in your room upon arrival. In addition, the breakfast buffet is included as well and if you do not choose the buffet then you are allotted an amount of $35.00 per person to spend on an a la carte menu or In Room Dining. We would like you to contact us personally offline as we would like to correct any deficiencies and clear up any errors or misconceptions that occurred while you were staying with us. We believe in our product and are committed to delivering the highest standards and levels of service.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Visiting from out of town, we treated our parents here for an absolutely lovely afternoon luncheon. The patio over looks the river valley, with the hotels garden and fountain providing a very relaxing atmosphere. The chicken lollipops, gormet hamburger, garlic goat cheese dip and refreshments were exquisite. Would absolutely return!

Beautiful building, great views of Edmonton's river valley, exceptional service, a pool and close to many fine restaurants and pubs. We like to wander down to the Sherlock Holmes pub for a beer before heading back to the hotel. You are also close to the Citadel Theatre if you fancy a play. The brunch is very good. The rooms are more than adequate. We always enjoy our stay.

On my wedding night in July 2009, we stayed in a King room with a spectacular river view. Now we spend 2 nights there each year to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Everything about the Fairmont Hotel MacDonald is wonderful. The staff provides excellent customer service, the rooms are beautifully appointed and in keeping with the historic qualities of the hotel. The beds and linens are of utmost quality and comfort. The Confederation Lounge is warm and inviting and the outdoor patio is surrounded by beautiful gardens and offers stunning views of the river valley. The Harvest Restaurant is definitely one of the finest in Edmonton, and the pool, gym and spa are gorgeous. Our anniversary falls during the Taste of Edmonton Festival, which offers terrific sampling of foods from many of Edmonton's best eateries, as well as great live bands. The Festival is a short walk from the Hotel MacDonald, so enjoying that is also a big part of our annual stay. Our 4th Anniversary is coming up and we really look forward to this year's stay.

Room Tip: There isn't a bad room or suite in this hotel. You can get a river view which is spectacular from any floor and any location on each floor. The city view rooms are especially nice from the higher floors.

The downtown area of Edmonton is under construction so getting to the hotel is quite an undertaking! We stayed at the hotel to celebrate our 30 plus anniversary on the July 1st Canada Day long weekend. We advised the hotel of our special occasion ahead of time plus when checking in, the concierge asked if we were celebrating anything & we told her, however nothing was done to make our experience special. We were offered an upgrade for $70/night which included a newly renovated room along with breakfast which we accepted. The room was nice though nothing special but the view of the Saskatchewan river & valley was nice! The bathroom had no fan & the shower pressure was very weak! We enjoyed the buffet breakfast but would recommend ordering from the menu since the food was really fresh & hot! We enjoyed the hotel's ambience & loved walking around the gardens. We had a drink & a 'red-velvet cake' to die for in the Confederation Lounge. The thing that was absolutely unbelievable was the 'pre-authorization' charges on our credit card! We left a credit card with the concierge upon check-in for incidentals & after we got home we found that although we had pre-paid for our room, the hotel charged our credit card $100 three times, $300 once, $500 once plus all the charges for breakfasts & drinks in the lounge! Since we checked out on the weekend & Monday was a bank holiday, it took almost a week for the 'pre-authorization' charges to be removed from the credit card. Couldn't help wondering what may have happened had we been on a vacation far away form home with only one credit card! I called the hotel to ask why they needed to do so many 'pre-authorizations' & was told that this had been done in error!!?? No apology or other reason was given so I guess we won't be returning!

Thank you for choosing to spend your special occasion with us and for taking the time to share the comments of your most recent stay.

It was disappointing to hear of the deficiencies you encountered while staying with us. We are known for attention to detail and we take pride in ensuring we make the most of celebrations and it appears in this instance a communication breakdown occurred. I have followed up with our reservations team to ensure clear communication and that our policies are followed. With regards to the pre-authorizations that occurred on your card, there was a glitch in the system and I apologize for this. This has now been rectified to ensure future guests are not affected. We have done further training with our team as our goal is to ensure we are exceeding our guests expectations.

We do hope to welcome you back to The Fairmont Hotel Macdonald in the near future as we would like to restore you faith in us.
