This is a small Chinese restaurant located in a small shopping mall near the No. 1 highway (16th Ave N.) off Chinatown. Parking is pretty limited, but you can find some good Southern Chinese food at reasonable prices there. Service is only so so though.

Dim Sum can be mediocre, ok, good or really good.
I've been going to the original Tai Pan when it was in Chinatown for many years, they were so busy that eventually they moved to larger premises on Centre St. and it's still packed on weekends. Typical of better Chinese places, you have to get a number and wait by the door for it to be called. This place is patronized primarily by orientals which in my book is the best endorsement for an ethnic restaurant . You put your choices on a list and the dishes are steamed or fried to order, it takes a little longer but the food is piping hot when it arrives. My favorites are: steamed shrimp dumplings, fried shrimp rolls, fried shrimp dumplings w/mayo, shrimp rice rolls, steamed beef dumplings, spare ribs w/black bean sauce, and same on rice bowl, fried octopus tentacles and others which slip my memory. I love their shrimp because they are the larger 25-30 count size. We've been there for dinner on special occasions mainly for the Peking duck which is really good for Calgary, but not to the level of Toronto or Richmond BC. They've opened another Tai Pan on McLeod Trail which I did not go to yet, but according to my sources caters more to western palates.

I liked this place years ago but my most recent visits have brought some dissatisfaction. The rice crepes used to be awesome but they've changed their recipe and now the crepes are sticky and powdery. Other food is still pretty good and they have the best black-bean steamed ribs and an awesome mango sponge roll. But I like my rice crepes, so it gets a 3 instead of a 4.
