“Filled a void but nothing special”

Interesting menu and decent beer selection though the food is nothing to get too excited about. If you are a wino there choice is limited. The service was fine. There are better places in the Stephen Ave. for the money.

“Authentic Irish in Calgary”
Reviewed September 14, 2013

Looking for a Guinness and some great Irish food in Calgary? This is the place.

I had the opportunity to stop in and enjoy the bangers and mashed. Excellent! A Guinness, Bangers and mashed - which by the way is Colcannon - covered in gravy and sauté onions. To make it even better, the weather was perfect and I was able to sit outside watching and enjoying all of the activity on 8th Ave SW..

Got some time to stop and relax? Stop here.

“A Fine Pub”
Reviewed August 24, 2013

We had just arrived in Calgary on a Friday and were staying downtown for the weekend, then to head off touring. 8th Avenue SW is a wonderful pedestrian street, and there were so many choices for a drink and a meal. . . . Some were trendy, some were ethnic, but after our airline flights, we just wanted to slide into something. . . comfortable. We had a couple of pints and OK, we're terribly traditional, some fish 'n' chips.

PROS: Very friendly staff, and they even opened up a side room that we had for ourselves most of the time (it was only about 4 p.m., and not busy). Service was very nice and unhurried, and the fish was moist with a crunch, and the chips were nice and hot. We had not been to Canada for several years and were impressed with the selection of craft beers. We tried several and they were quite good. Since we were seated inside, we had an opportunity to appreciate the paneling and the prints and other decorative items. Nicely done and created and warm and friendly atmosphere.

CONS: Remember, this is a traditional pub. So no "cons" for the pints and pub grub. We were tired and did not stay for the music, which would have been fun.

“Excellent meal and friendly staff”
Reviewed August 17, 2013 via mobile

We walked along the pedestrian street in search of dinner and decided to choose the place with the most people smiling at the outside tables. It was the most crowded, too. The food was great and our entire party left happy. The servings are generous. The only restrooms we saw were down a narrow, winding staircase. If you have mobility issues, you may want to call them first to see if there's an elevator or other access to the restroom.

“Excellent Pub”
Reviewed August 13, 2013

We had one night in Calgary and were walking around and simply stumbled upon the James Joyce. It was great food in a wonderful atmosphere. We ate at an outside table, enjoying people watching and listening to the Irish music playing.
I had the Bangers and Mash, which was extraordinary. Prices were very reasonable and the service was efficient, but not pushy.
