This tiny restaurant is across the street from an Extended Care facility where our mother is staying. As a treat for her birthday in March (she's 96) we got takeaway. The owner was so excited she added dessert and was very helpful. We had to order to suit some picky eaters, so we stuck to "western" Chinese food. The quality was good, but we were left wanting to try the "real thing".
In April we had the chance to go for lunch without any nervous nellies to satisfy. WOW! We had a beef and lime dish and a veggie dish off the "regular" menu. These were delightful. The beef dish was tangy and a bit spicy, with some vegetables and a complete absence of that sticky brown stuff that seems to pass in a lot of Chinese restaurants. The beef was tender, not covered in batter, and cooked nicely. The vegetable dish was fresh and crisp - cooked to perfection with a mild sauce. While we were eating, a pork dish (hocks, I think), passed us on the way to a nearby table and the aroma was fantastic. Next trip to Calgary we will be back for more. We're not Chinese so we don't claim to know "real" Chinese food, but this was a cut above any other Chinese food we've had recently in Calgary.
Prices were reasonable and the service was excellent. The place itself is a bit down trodden, but the food makes this a secondary consideration. We'll definitely be back and ready to try some more adventurous dishes (no tripe please!).
