I came here during The Big Taste and lunch was very busy. I respectfully inquired about our food as it was taking awhile.

When it did come out, we got a free appetizer of fried fish sticks, which came with a delectable pair of white sauce and hot sauce. The pasta with beef was full of flavour and not overly salty. The dessert was a subtle cheesecake with popcorn and raspberry sauce, quite original and not too bad.

The best part was, at the end of the meal they said our bill was taken care of! They gave us the meal for free because it was late. On top of that they were very apologetic. Their service was wonderful throughout. We tipped them $20 anyway.

The food at Downtown Food is consistently creative in presentation and outstanding in taste. My lunch companion and I each had a kale salad and shared the prawn tacos and eggplant wontons. The tacos and wontons in particular were outstanding. These were both starters and they were sized as such - we should have ordered a bit more food. We will definitely do so next time.

My friend and I went to check out downtown food and were not disappointed. We started with the daily soup creation which was a beautiful green soup garnished with a pansy. Next we had the qualicum bay scallop "ceviche" - AMAZING. For the main course I had the 8 oz brant lake wagyu striploin and my friend had the sablefish. For dessert we had the Chef's special which was a cheesecake dish with something else (can't remember!)

Everything was beautifully presented tasted delicious. This restaurant is known for their "rooftop eco-driven garden, complete with solar powered drip irrigation, 2 beehives and over 40 different vegetables, herbs, fruits and greens."

Chef Darren does a great job of presenting fresh Canadian cuisine in downtown Calgary.

The chef here was a friendly, honest guy named Darren who has an incredible love of food. His creations are interesting twists on classics, using exquisite ingredients and prepared with skill and care. Each dish was a pleasure, and the ensemble was a treat. The restaurant is otherwise solid, if unspectacular, but in the end it's all about the food... and the food was exceptional.
