Marble Slab Creamery is a US-based ice cream franchise. A few years ago, a Calgarian bought the local rights and now Marble Slabs have popped up in several different locations around the city.
Marble Slab’s main business is hard ice cream cones. The marble slab in their name is a chilled slab of marble, where they take your choice of ice cream flavours (there are usually about a dozen on offer) and work in your choice of “mix-in”. There is a large selection of mix-ins: chocolate chips, nuts, frozen berries, candy pieces, cookie pieces, and much more. After a few moments, you have an ice cream flavour of your own design! This concept is seductive, and you can get more than one thing mixed into your ice cream, for a small extra charge. They make their own waffle cones in-store, and you can upgrade your cone from just a plain waffle cone to a waffle cone that has been dipped in chocolate, white chocolate, or dipped in chocolate with sprinkles or M&Ms on top. Of course, there is a modest additional charge for the fancier cones, too. Some of the combinations that I have tried are lemon ice cream, with frozen raspberries mixed in; and pumpkin pie ice cream with pecan pieces mixed in.
It costs $4.99 (including GST) for a single scoop of ice cream and one mix-in, in a plain waffle cone. (Or a waxed paper bowl, if you prefer.) The scoop is a generous size, so that’s a good value. But be careful if you bring kids (or your inner child): additional mix-ins are $0.79 each, upgrading to a “premium” cone instead of a basic waffle cone will cost another $0.99, making the price climb fairly quickly! It’s one thing to intentionally indulge in a small $8 ice cream cone, but you wouldn’t want to do it accidentally, in a burst of enthusiasm or a moment of weakness. And the beautiful photos of suggested flavour combinations, posted right at kids’ eye level and many featuring two or three mix-ins, don’t help keep down the tab either.
The Westhills Marble Slab is quite small; there is one bistro table with two chairs for adults, and one kid-sized table and chairs, and that’s it. I find the place to be a tight squeeze and usually take my ice cream cone for a walk toward the other Westhills shops or back to my car, depending on the weather. In the summer, they have a patio table & chairs set up on the sidewalk out front, which is great when the weather is hot.
Marble Slab also has ice cream cakes and some other premade ice cream desserts ready to take home.
