“Not going back”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 3, 2013

I went for dinner on a slow night. There was no one at the entrance to seat me. I ordered a sunomono salad with octopus which was basically octopus and noodles swimming in vinegar, I didn't like it. Then I ordered the sushi and sashimi combination for one, which was a risky choice, as the waitress did not know any information about it, like quantity or what usually comes in it. Good points are: fish was fresh and it was more than enough for one (Alaska King Crab California roll, 4 sushi, 8 sashimi, 6 tekamaki). Bad points: presentation was pretty bad (hey sushiman, a combination plate is your time to show off!), the roll pieces are extremely big (girls, never order this on a date), sashimi was just big bricks of fish. Waitress would disappear from time to time.

“Will be back again”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 2, 2013

First, Japanese food is so much more than sushi. And it's in the other foods where flavours really come alive at Fuji Yama (we didn't order any sushi so I can't speak to that). However, we order 5 appetizers (so we could sample many items instead of just one or two). Could barely finish the fifth item. All delicious.

Ordered:
Joanna Secret: Crab, Mango, Avocado, deep-fried and topped with sweet mayo and Tobiko - red fish eggs - my absolute favourite of all 5 we ordered
Gyoza Japanese Pork Dumplings - incredibly fresh, juicy and delicious
Coconut Tempura Shrimp - do not pass these up - my wife's favourite
Yakitori Chicken skewers with green onion in Teriyaki sauce - wow, outstanding
Japanese Fish Cakes with cheddar and curry mayonnaise - the heaviest of the 5 due to the oozing melted cheddar'ish, Cheese-Whiz'ish inside but pretty good too.

A really good Sapporo on-tap (forgot how good this beer is) and it was a good night - which will be repeated again. Good choice.

“Bento box!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2013

We enjoy eating lunch here at least once a week. FInd that it's not very busy and the service is great. Menu has a good selection. If your in a hurry, try the bento box with either 2 or 3 choices. The chicken katsu, chicken kashagi, or the beef teriakyi ( cooked to order ) is a decent, over all great meal. Prices are very reasonable. Parking during the week can be a bit of a challenge, and the park plus stalls are not the same, the ones right out side the door are for 1 hours, right across on the other side, there good for 2 hours.

“Good sushi”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 2, 2013 via mobile

The atmosphere is nothing special. Look past that. The sushi is quite good. There is a broad selection. The fish is fresh.

The menu has many choices beyond sushi.

The restaurant is in the lower level of a heritage building on the corner of 17 ave and 8 st sw.

“Unique dishes”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 1, 2013 via mobile

Fuji Yama on 17th was a very nice place and very busy on a mid week, happen to had a craving for sushi and to was right there. Did not wait long for table, but being busy the waitress did take awhile to come by asking for drinks. This was the 'unique' dish, coconut batter and flake on the tempura shrimp... Too much for my liking, taste just okay. The sushi rolls were the main reason, ordered some roll( Cali, salmon skin, spider and dynamite roll) which were very tasty and filling. The roll were perfect in that the rice did not break ...and the roll was packed delicious ingredient .
