“Downtown photostop”
Reviewed October 6, 2011

Not a bad place to take some photos of the city skyline, pool & fountain. The flowers were blooming in their hanging baskets that time of the year.

“An impulse stop.”
Reviewed September 19, 2011

Earlier in the day, we had spotted the Olympic Plaza from the top of the Calgary Tower. We then decided to end our day with dinner at one of the establishments along the Stephen Avenue Mall, and it happened that we parked only about a block from the Olympic Plaza, so we wandered down there after dinner. This was the venue for the medal ceremonies during the 1988 Calgary Olympics, and it is now a pleasant urban park, preserving the medal stand, and centered on a large fountain pool, shallow enough for walking or frolicing - as your mood dictates. I found it's atmosphere to be somewhat reminiscent of NYC's Washington Square Park. Dogs are not allowed here, but it is an otherwise pleasant place to relax while planning your next stop in Calgary, or while enjoying a picnic lunch. It is apparently a popular place for ice skating, concerts, festivals and other gatherings.
At the west end of the park are Paterson’s larger-than-life bronze statues of the “Famous Five,” a group of women from Alberta who went to the Canadian Supreme Court in 1927, to get a ruling that women are people under the law, setting the precedent for future female leaders and politicians. Their efforts were also the basis for establishing Persons Day. This sculpture, alone, is worth stopping to see and admire.
